Description	:	James Berry Vickery III, 80, of Bangor, Formerly of Unity, died Friday, June 13, 1997, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor following a brief illness. He was born in Unity on April 23, 1917, the son of James and Annie (Stewart) Vickery. He was the sixth generation descended from David Vickery, who settled in Unity in 1794. He was educated in Unity schools, at Maine Central Institute and graduated from Bates College in 1940. Read More	James Berry Vickery III, 80, of Bangor, Formerly of Unity, died Friday, June 13, 1997, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor following a brief illness. He was born in Unity on April 23, 1917, the son of James and Annie (Stewart) Vickery. He was the sixth generation descended from David Vickery, who settled in Unity in 1794. He was educated in Unity schools, at Maine Central Institute and graduated from Bates College in 1940. He received a master's degree in history from the University of Maine at Orono in 1950 and was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree by the university in 1993. After serving as a staff sergeant in the U. S. Army during World War II, he began his 34-year career as an English teacher at Lee Academy, Dexter High School and Brewer High School, retiring in 1981. He also taught a summer course in Maine history at the University of Maine at Orono. His publications include "A History of the Town of Unity" (1954), the "Illustrated History of Bangor" (1969, 1976), and the Illustrated History of Brewer" (1976). He served as editor for "The Journals of John E. Godfrey." Until his recent illness, he was a familiar figure on the streets of downtown Bangor, spending much of his retirement pursuing his research interests at the Bangor Public Library. His honorary doctoral citation from the University of Maine described him as a "highly respected scholar of Maine history who has devoted more than 50 years of his life to researching this important subject." He is predeceased by two brothers, Everett and Eric Vickery. Survivors include cousins John and Elizabeth Vickery of Orrington, John and Betsy Vickery of Hampden, Lynne Vickery of North Berwick, Russell and Janet Vickery of Brewer, Amy Vickery, Chad Vickery, both of Brewer, David and Ann Sleeper of Herman and Ed Sleeper of Bangor. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be private in the family lot in Pond Cemetery, Unity.
