James C Johnston was the second son of Joseph C and Margaret Olivia Johnston Johnston. He was born on a farm north of Deep River, Iowa where he grew to manhood. At an early age he united with the Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church. He was also a member of the IOOF and Rebekah Lodge of Montezuma. He was married to Mary Ann Johnston on February 25, 1903. James C Johnston was the second son of Joseph C and Margaret Olivia Johnston Johnston. He was born on a farm north of Deep River, Iowa where he grew to manhood. At an early age he united with the Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church. He was also a member of the IOOF and Rebekah Lodge of Montezuma. He was married to Mary Ann Johnston on February 25, 1903. They were the parents of one child that died in infancy. Mary died in 1911. After the death of his wife he made his home with his wife's people at Montezuma, Iowa. The illness of his own mother called him to returned to Deep River. For four years he devoted his entire time in helping his sister and her husband in administering to her comforts until she passed away in 1928. After the death of his brother Henry C Johnston, he seemed to have a new work. He fathered and helped Pearl E Johnston and her son Richard. On January 22, 1930 he married his brother's widow. He took this new responsibility with so much pride and devotion. On Tuesday April 7, 1931 he entered the Lutheran Hospital at Des Moines for medical treatment. After diagnosis, it was decided to perform an operation which took place at 11 O'clock Tuesday night. The result revealed a state of malignant infection in such an advanced state that there was little hope for his recovery and just 48 hours following the operation he passed to his reward James Johnston was great hearted and genial. He was never happier than when rendering a service to someone. His good deeds were many but were not paraded. To know him was to love him.
