Miller, one of the pioneers residents of this city, passed away early Tuesday morning at his home on Gladstone Hill, after an illness of several months from hardening of the arteries. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the M.E. Church, Rev. Jas. J. Davies, pastor of the church preaching the funeral sermon. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. James C. Miller was born in McVeytown, Pa., Dec. 5, 1847. His father died when he was but one year old. He came to Polo, Ill., in 1872 and resided there until 1875 when he moved to Dexter, Iowa. On Jan. 10, 1877, he was united in marriage with Miss Ida Luella May, who survives him. In 1882 they moved to Atlantic, Iowa, and came to Calliope in 1884. In 1886 they moved down to Hawarden and soon after erected their first home on Gladstone Hill, where they have since resided. At that time there were only two or three residences in the eastern part of town and their home was built in a cornfield. Six children were born to them, five of whom are still living. The children living are; Roy E. Miller of Hawarden, Frank D. Miller of Waterloo, Mabel Miller, John Miller and Ted Miller who reside at home. One daughter, Ruth, was accidently killed in 1911. There are two grandchildren, Bernice L. and Dorothy E. Miller. He also leaves one half-brother and two half-sisters. They are Chas. F. Robinson of Philadelphia, Mrs. Alice M. Smith of Johnstown, Pa., and Mrs. Annie M. Long of Chicago. During his early residence in Hawarden he was employed in a lumber yard and also clerked in the first stores here. He was deputy postmaster for a couple of years under Postmaster Jas. Gehan. He was always an active member in the Methodist church and was one of the charter members of the organization in Calliope and Hawarden. He was a member of the official board for many years and at his request the members of the official board, with whom he had been closely associated for so long, acted as pall bearers. He was an accommodating neighbor, a kind husband and an affectionate father and was held in high regard by all who knew him.
