James Carl Loofbourrow, fourth son of James S. and Mary Loofbourrow was born Sept. 24, 1883, and died at the home of his parents in Cedar township, Oct. 2, 1903, aged 20 years and 8 days. In the fall of 1900 he entered the Creighton University in Omaha. In 1902 he returned home to aid in carring for his parents, who were in ill health, and to recuperate his own strength, which had beem failing from his too close application to school work and not until this fall did he attempt to resume his studies. He entered Howe's Academy at Mt. Pleasant, intending to prepare himself for a scientific course at the Armour Institute of Technology. In two weeks his health again failing he returned home to stay, and only a few more days was he with us. At the age off 15 he gave his heart to Christ, joined the Free Will Baptist church of Hillsboro, and remained a faithful member to the last. Carl was a young man of kindly disposition, pleasing appearance, industrious habits, scrupuously faithful in his duties, loving and considerate of those around him. Ill health had tortured him for years. His buoyancy gave way to despondency when he realized his inability to pursue his studies. His ambition seemed thwarted, and his vision of life being perverted by misery he did that which we know he never would have done, but for physical and mental suffering. Carl had many friends and no enemies. The multitude present to witness the funeral ceremonies, attested the great interest in him and the sad circumstances of his taking away. The sermon was preached by his pastor, the Rev. Mr. McElroy, who paid kindly tribute to the character of the young man whom he knew so well. The pall bearers were six young friends of the deceased. Te honorary pall bearers were his class mates in Sunday school. Six young lady schoolmates acted as flower girls. The floral tributes were beautiful and abundant. The kindly esteem and consideration of sympathetic friends have done much to lighten the cloud of sorrow hanging over the bereaved family. Source: Van Buren Co.
