James Conety Passes Away Friday Night at His Farm Home Northwest of Waterloo. This community was grieved as well as very much surprised to learn last Friday of the serious illness of James Conety and still more grieved to learn Saturday morning that he had passed away during the night, death ensuing after a brief illness, of pneumonia, about 10 o'clock Friday night, at his farm home five miles northwest of Waterloo. Mr. Conety was in Waterloo within the last two or three weeks and apparently in his usual good health, and his illness and death coming so soon thereafter makes it seem all the more unreal. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home, Rev. E Aston of the Presbyterian church officiating. Burial was at Prospect Hill cemetery in the family lot where two children, who died in infancy, were buried. All the children were home for the funeral except Simpson, the oldest one, who lived on a homestead in South Dakota and could not be reached by telegram, owing to the distance from the railroad to his place. E. P. Noyes, A. E. Burke, Thomas Merryweather, Ezra Domina, Robert Merryweather and Frank Guy were the pallbearers, the burial being in charge of Undertaker Byars of Valley. Mr. Conety was born in Ireland, near Belfast, June 7, 1853, and was therefore in his fifty-eighty year when he died. He came to America in 1872 settling in New York, where in 1877 he was married to Miss Mary Mullen with who seven children were born. The family came west in 1880, first settling in Waterloo and several years later Mr. Conety bought the place west of town which was their home so many years. It was about four years ago he sold this place to J. C. Robinson and after looking over the state more or less bought the eighty on which the family has since resided. The widow and children have the sympathy and love of their many friends and the community at large in their bereavement. Of the children, there are five girls and two boys as follows: Mrs. Kate McDermot, Tekamah; Nancy Conety, teaching school at Indianola, Nebraska; Mrs. Ann White, Valley; Mrs. Helen Kinnan, Cozad; Jessie, at home; Simpson, Sulphur, South Dakota; and Wilbur at home. James Conety lived much to himself and his family but he was a sociable and companionable man to those who knew him intimately, and one who has known him during his residence here said of Mr. Conety that in all that time he never heard an unkind work spoken of him. This certainly is a worthy tribute, and we believe worthily bestowed. Mr. Conety was a pioneer and truly representative of the class which made this country what it is today. The deceased has been a strong vigorous character and scarcely knew what sickness was. He said only a short time before death that he would be out in a short time. The funeral was held at the house last Monday, at 2 p.m., Rev. Aston of Waterloo, preaching the sermon. Interment was made in the family lot in Prospect Hill cemetery where several children had past before him. All of the family except one son reached home for the services. Mr. Conety's wife, Mary, two sons and five daughters. They are Jessie, Nancy, Simpson and Wilber Conety, single and three married; Mesdames Elmer White, D. J. McDermott of Tekamah and James Kinnon of Cozad. Card of Thanks.
