He died on Jan. 15, 2010, at the age of 90, at the Tilden Community Hospital. James Douglas Carter, son of Henderson W. and Anna Lee (James) Carter, was born on Dec. 27, 1919, in Antelope County, Nebraska. He received his first education at Morning Star School and graduated from the Tilden High School with the Class of 1937. After graduation, he worked several years for Tilden Citizen and later worked for other newspapers around the state as a linotype operator. On Oct. 27, 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served over four years. He served over two years in the print shop at Great Lakes Naval Training Station and the remainder on various islands in the Pacific. On March 21, 1942, while on a three-day Navy pass, he married Doris Christiansen at the home of her parents in Tilden. She returned to Great Lakes with him where they lived in quarters on the Naval base. After discharge from the Navy in November of 1945, he joined his father in the produce, feed and seed business in Tilden. After his father's retirement, he worked full time on his acreage in west Tilden where he developed a reputation of producing high-quality feeder pigs. Douglas joined the Morning Star United Brethren Church as a youth and later the Evangelical and Reformed Church, which is now Peace United Church of Christ. He served six years on the Tilden Public School Board and several years on the Tilden City Cemetery Board. He was also a member of American Legion Post 170. He is survived by his wife, Doris; three daughters, Doreen Kullbom and her husband Mick of Prescott, Ariz., Cathy Negus and her husband Dave of Tilden, and LuAnn Thoendel and her husband Bill of Hoskins; two sons, Don and his wife Lynn of Tilden, and Bill and his wife Peg of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nine stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one brother, Lee, of Norfolk. He was preceded in death by his parents and two nieces.
