Burial will follow in Union Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. Military rites will be by Groton Legion Post #39. Jim died Feb. 23, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen. James Duane was born on April 3, 1931 to Glen and Mildred (Sigdestad) McKittrick in Day County. He was baptized at Bergen Lutheran Church in rural Bristol and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pierpont. Jim attended country school north of Bristol and later Bristol High School. He enlisted with the United States Army, serving from 1953-1955, during which he was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. and Fort Lewis, Wash. Following his discharge, he returned to South Dakota and made his home in Day County. He married Margaret Haviland Wright on Aug. 6, 1952. Born to this union were three daughters: Roxanne, Melanie and Dawn. Jim was a longtime employee at both the Bristol and Webster grain elevators. On July 19, 1975 he united in marriage to Hazel Holland Rix. The couple made their home in Groton, where Jim managed the American Legion for nine years. Jim was a member of the Groton United Methodist Church, Garden Club and Groton Senior Citizens. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, morning coffee and watching school sports activities. Jim enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of Groton, five daughters: Roxanne Borders and fiance Mike Ford of Westminster, Colo., Melanie (Ted) Sedler of Beaverton, Ore., Dawn (Greg) Haar of Miller, Diane (David) Feller of Sioux Falls and Pamela (Douglas) Bahr of Groton; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two brothers: Harley McKittrick of Andover and Roger (Dorothy) McKittrick of Anoka, Minn. He is preceded in death by his parents, two infant sons, one sister, Donna Peckham and one brother, Dale McKittrick. Published in the Aberdeen News on 2/27/2005.
