James Hill Is The Victim Harry Allison Did Not Want to Fire While Hill Was In a Dangerous Position, but He Thought Himself Safe and the Accident Happened. James Hill is living at the point of death in a small house in the upper part of the city, and Harry Allison is stricken with grief because he accidentally shot his playmate and companion. The accident happened yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, at which time Harry Allison, a 15 year old boy who resides with his mother, Mrs. Mattie Allison, the owner of a grocery store on the Calcutta road near the Grant street school, was playing with several companions. James Hill, his cousin, whose home is in Wheeling, but who has been living with his aunt, Mrs. Ella Gillson, a widow, was in the party, as was James Green, a boy of 12 years. The houses occupied by the principals in the shooting are on the same lot and the boys were the best of friends. Some time ago Allison purchased a Flobert rifle without the knowledge of his mother, and the boys have frequently passed the time in shooting. Yesterday they were in the yard in the rear of the store, and were getting as much fun as possible from the gun and a box of cartridges. An outhouse was used as the background of the target, and the boys had been at their play for only a short time when Hill entered the building, but as he closed the door called on Allison, who had the gun, to continue shooting, but to aim to the left side. Allison replied that he wouldn't shoot but would wait until his companion came out, but Hill coaxed with a few words, and Allison, aiming the gun to the direction he believed Hill wanted him to shoot, pulled the trigger immediately the lads heard the sound of a body falling, but thought that Hill was pretending that he had been shot, and had fallen to give them a scare. They were standing in the porch when the gun was discharged, when Green, who had witnessed the scene throughout, walked down the yard and opened the door of the building. Looking in he saw Hill lying on the floor in the left corner and said: "He's shot. No he isn't, he's just fooling us." Then he walked back to Allison, but hearing no sound in the building returned to the place. Looking at the motionless form of the prostrate boy more closely he discovered what had escaped him the other time - a small pool of blood on the floor, the dark fluid apparently coming from a wound in the front of his head. Rushing out he shouted: "Jim is shot! Jim is shot!" Allison, realizing at once what had been done, became frightened, and asked Green to say nothing about it, and he would run away. "You did it," replied Green, "and you might as well stay here and own up up to it." Green then gave the alarm, but he was afraid to tell the Gillson family, and running to his own home only a short distance away, told his mother. Mrs. Green immediately informed Mrs. Gillson of the sad happening, and that lady was so startled that she almost fainted, but recovering, called for assistance. Her son, Will Gillson, chanced to be near, and he carried the infortunate boy to the house where he was made as comfortable as possible, and Doctor Norris was called. He examined the wound and probed for the ball, but was unable to find it. The bullet had passed through the thin wall of the building, entering the forehead of the victim above the right eye, continuing in a downward course until it had lodged in the brain near the right ear. He said he did not expect the child to recover, as the ball could not be extracted without opening the skull, which operation would in itself be fatal. Meantime Hill had been unconscious, and did not recover his senses until late in the night, and only for a short time. The cause of the accident can easily be explained from the stories of the witnesses, but the boys could not understand it. Hill said to shoot to his left, which, of course, would send the bullet to the right side of the building, where Hill was standing. The families are heartbroken because of the accident, as the boys were friends and never had any differences. Young Allison is almost crazed with grief, and told his story to the reporter between sobs. "Jim Green, my cousin, and I were shooting mark, " he said, "when he went into the building. He shut the door and called me to shoot, but I said not. He coaxed me, and then I heard him fall. I think Jim stepped over to the other side. I wouldn't have done it for the world," and the boy broke out in passionate weeping. So intense was his grief that it was feared he might attempt to do himself injury, and he was closely watched. A telegram was sent to James Hill the boy's father and he arrived here this morning. This afternoon Doctor Norris stated that the wounded lad was in the same condition, and he might live through he day although his condition was critical in the extreme. James Hill, the father, is a sanitary presser, and has had more than his share of bad luck. A daughter was once playing with a dog, when the animal suddenly became mad, and bit off her nose. James Hill, the boy who was shot in the head on Sunday afternoon by his companion, Harry Allison, is still in a critical condition, and the attending physicians fear he cannot recover. At times he is conscious, and suffers a great deal. He constantly attempts to tear the bandages from his head, and seems to be in agony the greater part of the time. The doctors have decided to perform an operation if there is no other chance, and even then it seems almost certain that the little fellow will lose his life. Very Much Better. Little James Hill Will Likely Get Well. James Hill, the boy who was shot by Harry Allison last Sunday, is getting better every day, and his friends now think he will recover. The lad suffered terribly from the bullet in his head, but now he is better, in spite of the fact that the bullet is in the old place and has not yet been extracted. Hill has recovered so far that it is easily seen he is fast gaining strength. Young Allison, who did the shooting, has spent a week of worry and watchfulness, but now that Hill is better he once more feels easy, although still sorry that he fired the shot. James Hill Is Dead He Was Shot In the Head by Harry Allison Suffered Almost Six Weeks The Boy Held Out Bravely, but Began to Sink Several Days Ago -- The Accident Which Caused His Death May Not Be Investigated by the Authorities. James Hill, the boy who was shot in the head by a companion almost six weeks ago, died on Tuesday evening. It will be remembered that the boys were shooting at mark in the rear of a house on Calcutta road on Sunday afternoon when Harry Allison fired the fatal bullet. It was all a mistake, and the bullet lodged in Hill's head, but in such a way that hopes for his recovery were for a time entertained. He rallied after a few days, and made a hard fight for life, but one side was paralyzed and he could not get well. On Monday he became worse and suffered severely until he died. A short time after the shooting he was taken to the home of his uncle, James Densmore, in California Hollow, and from there the funeral took place this afternoon, the remains being interred in Spring Grove cemetery. The boy's father, a potter employed in Wheeling, came here the day after the shooting, and has since been at the bedside of the sufferer. Hill was 13 years of age and popular with all his companions. It is believed the authorities will take no action in the case, since it is plain that the shooting was purely accidental. The funeral was largely attended.
