Description	:	OBIT: Word has been received here of the death of J. E. Burke, 83, a Kittitas Valley pioneer, in Elsinore, Cal., yesterday. He would have been 84 years old next month. A resident of the Kittitas Valley for 52 years, he moved to Southern California four years ago because of failing health. He was born in Mt. Morris, NY, February 18, 1857. He would have been 84 years old next month. A resident of the Kittitas Valley for 52 years, he moved to Southern California four years ago because of failing health. He was born in Mt. Morris, NY, February 18, 1857. Starting west in 1873, he freighted and followed railroad building work in Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado and on through Idaho to Washington. He came to this valley in June, 1884 and purchased a farm. In 1885 he took a contract to move houses from Old Yakima at Union Gap to the present site of the city. He was married in 1886 to Charlotte Charlton and they made their home on a farm northeast of Ellensburg for many years. Mr. Burke took an active part in the development of the Kittitas Valley. He was twice elected to the office of county commissioner and was one of the organizers of the Alberta Creamery, which now is operated by the Kittitas County Dairymen's Association. He is survived by a daughter, Nellie C. Burke of Los Angeles; a son, J. Thomas Burke of Ellensburg; two grandsons and a granddaughter. Funeral services will be held in Ellensburg.
