Description	:	Miss Nellie Burke, 79, a native daughter of Kittitas County and veteran school teacher, died Thursday, July 14 at Bernath Nursing Home, following a lingering illness. She was born January 9, 1887 on the Naneum, the daughter of pioneer ranchers James E. and Charlotte Charlton Burke. After attending Ellensburg schools she was graduated from the Emerson College of Oratory in Boston, Massachusetts. Read More	Miss Nellie Burke, 79, a native daughter of Kittitas County and veteran school teacher, died Thursday, July 14 at Bernath Nursing Home, following a lingering illness. She was born January 9, 1887 on the Naneum, the daughter of pioneer ranchers James E. and Charlotte Charlton Burke. After attending Ellensburg schools she was graduated from the Emerson College of Oratory in Boston, Massachusetts. Between periods of high school teaching in Washington, Montana, Oregon and California, Miss Burke did gradate work in speech at the University of Washington, Northwestern University and the University of California at Los Angeles. She was instrumental in establishing the first special education classroom in the Ellensburg School System. Until her retirement in 1954 Miss Burke was speech therapist for Kittitas County schools. The Nellie Burke School established in 1965 was named in her honor. Miss Burke was a member of the Women's University Club and the Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by two nephews, James and Pat Burke of the Swauk and a sister-in-law, Mrs. J. T. Burke of the Swauk. Her brother, J. T. Burke died in 1962. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 18 in the Evenson Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. William R. Van Ness officiating. Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery. The family suggests that any remembrances be in the form of contributions to the Nellie Burke School, in care of Mrs. Christine Bettas, Route 2, Cle Elum. Ellensburg Daily Record, July 15, 1966
