Description	:	James Edmond Burt, son of William and Martha Burt, was born January 4, 1924, in Creighton, Nebraska. Jim died Monday, April 9, 2012, at the Autumn House in Lincoln, Nebraska. After graduating from Creighton High School, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in September 1942, during World War II. He was in the Third Marines stationed in Gaudalcanal and Bougainville. Read More	James Edmond Burt, son of William and Martha Burt, was born January 4, 1924, in Creighton, Nebraska. Jim died Monday, April 9, 2012, at the Autumn House in Lincoln, Nebraska. After graduating from Creighton High School, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in September 1942, during World War II. He was in the Third Marines stationed in Gaudalcanal and Bougainville. Returning to the States, Jim was assigned to the 5th Marine Division, and went to the Big Island of Hawaii. From there, he went to Iwo Jima. Jim was wounded, lying on the beach, when he saw the first flag raised on Mount Suribachi. Jim went back to Hawaii and the states, before being discharged in December 1945. His service awards include the Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific Medal with three battle stars, American Campaign Medals, and a National Defense Medal. Jim was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, joining in 1944. He served as VFW Commander of Post 1151, District 3 Commander, and Nebraska State VFW Commander in 1969 and 1970. Jim was married to Norma Soucek of Verdigre, and to this union, three children were born. Jim worked as a salesman for Mormon Feeds and was a rural mail carrier in Creighton for many years. He married Betty Fagot in 1978 in Lexington, where he later retired from the Rural Letter Carriers. Jim then became the Dawson County Veterans Service Officer in Lexington. He retired in 1986, and Jim and Betty traveled for a couple years before settling in Alamo, Texas. Jim enjoyed the outdoors; fishing, froggin', playing golf, and playing cards. He loved his life in Texas, and the happiness that his more than 33 years of marriage to Betty brought. Nothing brightened his days more than spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim is survived by: daughters, Mary (Tom) Upshaw of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Janelle (Tim) Cox of Louisville, Nebraska; seven granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Diane Bockmann of Grand Island, Nebraska; step-son, Ron (Susan) Fagot of Lexington, Nebraska; step-daughter, Janet (Jim) Martin of Lincoln, Nebraska; eight step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Norma Hope Burt of Wisconsin and a host of relatives and friends. Jim was preceded in death by: wife, Betty; parents; son, Tom Burt; brothers, Bill, Robert and George Burt; sister, Dorrine Johnson; half-sister, Vera Mae Batchelder; and half-brother, Forrest Winters. Graveside services were at the Greenwood Cemetery, Creighton, NE. with the Creighton VFW Post 1151 Honor Guard and American Legion Post 74 presiding.
