Green, prominent local Civil war veteran, passed away very suddenly at the home of his daughter Mrs. John McGinness here at 8 o’clock Monday night. He was 82 years, 4 months and 11 days of age. Although Mr. Green had been failing somewhat in health for a year or more, his condition had not become serious and he was able to be about as usual. Last Monday evening he went to the kitchen at the McGinness home to get a drink and while there was suddenly stricken and passed away with in a few minutes. Embolism (blood clot) was the cause of his sudden departure. James Edward Green was born in Monroe county, Tennessee, August 27, 1840, and died in Lone Tree, Iowa, Jan. 8, 1923. In 1854, when he was fourteen years of age, he moved to Louisa county, Iowa. He was married to Mary Belle Green of Breckenridge county, Kentucky, on December 3, 1867. He and his wife lived on a farm in Louisa county, across the Iowa river, seven miles southwest of here until 1903, when they moved to Lone Tree to make their home. To this union five children were born, two of whom, Mrs. John McGinness and Oscar Green, both of Lone Tree, survive. Seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. His wife, who passed away seven months ago, and two sons and a daughter, William Allen, Andrew James and Eva Viola, preceded him in death. When he was about twenty-five years of age Mr. Green became a member of the Baptist church and he retained his membership in that church to the time of his death. Mr. Green served in the Civil war with Crocker's Brigade, being in Company C, 11th Iowa Infantry, 17th Army corps. He was with Sherman on his march to the sea. Mr. Green was one of Lone Tree’s oldest and most highly respected citizens. His kind and sympathetic nature had a most inspiring influence upon those with whom he came in contact. Always optimistic in his outlook upon life, he never failed to greet his friends with a smile and words of cheer. He will long be remembered as a kind and loving father, and a true and faithful friend and neighbor. Since the organization of the local post of the American Legion, Mr. Green showed much interest in the activities of the World war veterans As young at heart as the Legionaires, this good veteran of the Civil war took great pleasure in mingling with them at their club rooms, where he and his comrades were always welcome. During recent months he has scarcely missed a meeting of the local post, much to the delight of the ex-service men. Mr. Green will be missed greatly by residents of all ages in this community. The funeral was held at the Reformed church at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. E. D. Lantz. Burial was made in the Lone Tree cemetery. The pallbearers were Wm. Platt, Walter Shoquist, Frank Sherburne, J. E. Ashton, G.B. Kirchner and F.V. Shoquist.
