Pallbearers are Mathew Branaugh, Adam Tischler, Michael Brewer, Patrick Brewer, Dennis Krejci and Todd Smith. Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren. James was born November 23, 1921, on the family farm in Charles Mix County to Edward and Harriet Fay (Lanning) Branaugh. He grew up on the farm and attended Kennedy #1 school in his elementary years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. While in the Army he served in various combat engineer units in the United State and served in combat on the Aleutian Islands in the Pacific Theater. After being honorably discharged from the Army, James moved to Yankton where he initially drove a cab and then joined the Yankton Livestock Auction Market where he worked for the next 32 years. In 1980 he went to work for Alumax where he worked until his retirement in 1987. James married Joan (Jo) Pigsley in September of 1949 and they subsequently raised four children. Joan passed away in 1979 and he married Thelma Showers in January of 1980. He most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and neighborhood children as they grew up. He was an avid gardener and played horseshoes in local leagues and in many State, National and World tournaments over the years. He additionally enjoyed dancing at the VFW, playing cards at home with family and his special pet, "Felix" the cat. He was a long time member of the Episcopal Christ Church of Yankton. He is survived by his wife, Thelma, of Yankton; four children: Jeff (Deanna) Branaugh of Yankton, Robin (Joe) Tischler of Sioux Falls, SD, Marc Branaugh of Yankton and Greg (Denise) Branaugh of Sioux Falls, SD; foster son, Charles (Yo) Risling of Omaha, NE; 10 grandchildren: Leah and Molly Branaugh of Yankton; Megan and Adam Tischler of Sioux Falls; Ann (Michael) Phipps of Ft. Hood, TX; Andy Branaugh of Gettysburg, PA; Mathew (Susie) and Alison Branaugh of Sioux Falls, SD; and Chris and Kate Risling of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters: Gladys "Tootie" Hrdlicka of Armour, SD and Lula (Mae) Cressy of Yankton; five brothers: Fred Branaugh of Yankton, Charles "Budge" (Betty) Branaugh of Yankton, Wilbur "Billy" (Betty) Branaugh of Castro Valley, CA, Robert "Bobby" (Shirley) Branaugh of Pleasanton, CA and Thomas (Carol) Branaugh of Taylorsville, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; one sister, Francis; and two infant sons.
