His sudden passing is a shock to his family and a host of friends, but all have been pleased with the mental and physical stamina that enabled him actively to engage in business until well past eighty-two years of age. E.: or Mr Wilcox to younger folks, had been an active booster, farmer and civic leader of this part of the state for fifty years, except for a few years in business in Kansas City, Kansas. He was born on Straight Creek in Jackson county September 16, 1859. Final funeral arrangements are awaiting word from the younger son, Clarence of Seattle, Washington, but will probably be at the Bancroft church Saturday afternoon at 2:30. The only daughter, Bernice and elder son, Clyde, are expected from Kansas City this evening. Mr. Wilcox leave others of his immediate family, his wife, Mrs. Margaret J. Wilcox; one sister, Mrs. Susan Bristow of Goff; four half-sisters, Mrs Josie and Mrs Eva Gabbert of this community; Mrs. May Bostwick of Covington, Oklahoma; Mrs. Emma Faulkender of Jackson county; one half brother, Jesse G. Wilcox of Goff and many other relatives and friends. Rev. W. M. Mayfield of Oneida and Rev. Grant Hamm of Ontario will have charge of the funeral service. Burial will be in the family lot at Ontario. Wilcox "carried on" over four score years of active life." When the stout heart of J. E. Wilcox failed to function Thursday morning of last week it marked the close of a life that had been closely associated with the business and civic affairs of this part of Kansas for nearly double the average man's years of active duty. Tuesday of last week he was busy all day at his elevator on highway K9 on the Mo. Pacific railroad east of Goff. He had not felt the best for several days, but followed the habits of a lifetime in looking after business each day. Wednesday morning he bought some corn over the phone, at home, but did not feel able to go to his place of business. Before the day was over he suffered a stroke and was taken to the Sabetha hospital, where life ebbed in the early hours of Thursday morning. James E. Wilcox, son of W. T. and Lucretia (Green) Wilcox, natives of Illinois and Missouri, was born in Jackson county, Kansas, on September 16, 1859 and died on February 26, 1942 at the age of 82 years, five months and 10 days. His boyhood was spent on the Jackson county farm and at fifteen years of age he started for himself as a farm hand at $11 a month. At the age of 22 years he began farming for himself and was soon able to buy his first farm. In 1892 he started in business at Bancroft, and with the exception of about three years when he owned and operated the Wyandotte Seed Co. in Kansas City, Kansas, the past half century has been devoted to his business and farming interests in this community. In 1884 Mr. Wilcox was united in marriage to Miss Ella Vannote, a native of Nemaha county. Mrs. Wilcox died in 1915(sic 13 Apr. 1917). Three children survive them: Clyde, Kansas City, Mo.; Clarence, Seattle, Washington; Bernice, Kansas City. A granddaughter, Mrs. Mary Frances Zable, Wetmore, and great grandson, Louis Zable, Wetmore, are his remaining descendents. Two daughters, Ida May, at 7 years of age, and Mrs. Ada Swartz, in young womanhood, preceded him in death. Mr. Wilcox was united in marriage to Mrs. Margaret Judy of Kansas City, Kansas on July 16, 1918. The wife, one sister, Ms. Susan Bristow, Goff; four half-sisters, Mrs. Josie and Mrs Eva Gabbert of this community; Mrs Emma Faulkender, Circleville; Mrs. May Bostwick, Covington, Okla; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends remain to revere the memory of a devoted husband, brother, uncle and friend, who had given the full life of service. It is given, few men to serve as active, useful, public-spirited number of years as did J. E. Wilcox. For more than fifty years he had been a civic leader, community booster and enthusiastic worker for the better things of life in this community and his mental and physical ability remained for more than four score years. Funeral services at Bancroft church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 was in charge of two old friends, Rev. W. M. Mayfield of Oneida and Rev. M. G. Hamm, Ontario, both of whom paid tribute to the life of their devoted brother. A mail quartet, Deon Furst, Chas. Crandall, Grant Brown, and Elmer John Jorden, with Mrs. L. J. Stark, pianist, gave fitting musical selections. The friends who served as pallbearers were W. W. Stohr, T. L. Reed, Harry Johnstone, Francis Gabbert, F. H. Swartz and Harold Davis. Burial was in the Wilcox family lot in the Ontario cemetery.
