Description	:	Ottumwa Daily Courier April 10, 1970. James Elmer Smith Senior, 89, of 325 North Moore died at St. Joseph Hospital Thursday at 2:55 p.m. following a long illness. He was born Aug, 11, 1880 to Abner and Nancy Jane (Rutledge) Smith in Kankakee, Illinois. A retired CB&Q Railroad employee, he lived in Ottumwa the past 46 years. He married Eva Peek January 6, 1904 who preceded him in death in 1914. His marriage to Nellie L. Harl took place July 14, 1920. Emery and Mrs. Beverly Padget both of Ontario, California. and Beulah Young of Des Moines: One son, James E. Smith Jr. of Houston, Texas: 14 grandchildren; 12 great grand children: 8 great-great grandchildren; three brothers John, Ray and Bert all of Tama; and one sister Mrs. Mae Hempy of Mission, Texas. several nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Steven O. Patterson of First Assembly of God Church will officate. Burial will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mr. Donald Houser, Lefty Lovell, John Watts, Bob Watts, Delmar Miller and Frank Gee.
