A. Amsberry, both of Knoxville, himself a native of this county, was instantly killed by lightning at the home of his son, Loren, in Decatur county, Iowa, last Friday about noon. He had gone to the son's home to help with the corn planting. When the storm came up he drove in from the field, and Mr. Richards was in the act of carrying the seed corn from the wagon to the barn when the fatal crash came. His hat and shoes were torn off and a spot burned upon the breast, but otherwise the body was unscarred. The son was only a few feet away, but was uninjured. It has been reported that the barn was burned but that is not true. Deceased was a son of J.W. and Mary E. Richards, and was born in Marion county, near the old town of Gosport, April 29, 1873, being at the time of death, aged 45 years, 20 days. He leaves his widow and four children, one son and three daughters. Besides the immediate family there are sisters and brothers as follows: Mrs. Sue Hedrick and Mrs. W.A. Amsberry, of Knoxville; Mrs. Jas. Neely, of Des Moines; Mrs. A.E. Adams, of Lucas county, and Allen Richards, of Wayne county, near Corydon. Deceased was united in marriage with Miss Ida Bingham, of Washington township, about twenty-three years ago. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Bingham, still reside in Gosport neighborhood. The body was brought to Gosport Monday. Funeral services at the M.E. church in that neighborhood the same afternoon, conducted by Rev. Wm. L. Allen. Burial beside his parents in Gosport cemetery."
