Knox married Hannah Scully on February 6, 1883, in Wapello County, Iowa. On that marriage record, his parents were named as William and Sarah (Honn) Knox. In the 1925 Census for Ottumwa, Iowa, James stated that his parents were William and Sarah (Hare) Knox. In parenthesis under the name of Sarah Hare is written "Roxonna Harch." By comparing all of the information available, it appears that Hare was the correct spelling of Sarah's maiden name. Obituary From “The Ottumwa Courier,” July 4, 1950: James Knox Dies; Former Supervisor James F. Knox, 93, a former Wapello county supervisor, died at 9:30 a.m. today at the Ottumwa hospital. He was taken there a week ago after a fall in which he broke his hip. Mr. Knox, whose home was at 1204 Chester avenue, was a member and past president of the Shaul cemetery board of trustees, and earlier had operated farms near Ottumwa. He was born October 19, 1856 in Davis county, the son of William and Sarah Knox. He is survived by three sons and two daughters, Mrs. John Young, Des Moines; Joseph Knox, Long Beach, Calif.; John F. Knox, Ellis Knox and Mrs. Joe Powell, all of Ottumwa. His first wife, Mrs. Hannah Knox, and second wife, Mrs. Mary Knox, preceded him in death. The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel pending completion of funeral arrangements. “Rites Thursday For James Knox,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” July 5, 1950: Funeral services for James F. Knox, 1204 Chester avenue, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Johnson’s Funeral chapel, in charge of the Rev. W.R. Keesey. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Mr. Knox, a former member of the Wapello county board of supervisors, die Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Ottumwa hospital. He was 93 years old. Besides his three sons and two daughters, he is survived by 15 grandchildren;14 great-grandchildren, and five stepsons who are Wilbur Chisman, Mondamin, Iowa; Harold Chisman, Madison, Wis.; Herbert Chisman, Omaha, Neb.; Paul Chisman, Blakesburg; and Carl Chisman, Ottumwa. Pallbearers will be Frank Patrick, Harry Patrick, Cyril Goode, Oliver Millard, Ralph Watson, and John Scully.
