The birth year that I have entered for Sarah is approximate, based on her age at death on her gravestone of 88 years. -------------------- A biography was published for William and Sarah’s son James on Pages 662-663 of "History of Wapello County, Iowa, And Representative Citizens," Edited and Compiled by Capt. S.B. Evans and published in 1901, by Biographical Publishing Company, Chicago. In that biography, James was named as the son of William E. and Sarah E. (Hair) Knox. The article included information on James' parents, which reads as follows: “William Knox was born in Ireland, and lived there until he reached his majority. His wife was also a native of that country. They were married in New York, and after their marriage removed to Ohio, and in 1850 entered land in Lucas county, Iowa. They made a few improvements on the property. After a short residence there, Mr. Knox settled near Belknap, Davis county, where he lived for some years. While in Davis county, he served for three years in the Civil War in the Iowa regiment of infantry called the “Gray Beards.” In 1856, he located in Wapello county, having bought some wild land in Center township, west of the river. There he engaged in farming and stock raising. He died in Center township, November 4, 1884 [sic], and his wife died June 20, 1894 [sic]. To them were born five children namely: Joseph, who was a farmer in Jones county, Iowa, and died in 1880 [sic]; Margaret, who married William A. Carter, of Nebraska; Eliza, who married D.C. Peck, of Nebraska; William, who died in Davis county, aged eleven years; and James F., the subject of this sketch.” Another biography was published for James on Pages 506-508 of Volume II of “History of Wapello County, Iowa,” Harrison L. Waterman, Supervising Editor. This history was published by The S.J. Clarke Publishing Company of Chicago, in 1914. This article also included information on James’ parents, and I have included a transcription of that information on William’s memorial. Both the 1901 and 1914 biographies are now in the public domain and may be read online.
