James Franklin Manuello, the son of Frank and Lela DeSoto Manuello, was born Aug. 15, 1943, in Sterling. Jim lived his entire life in the Iliff area, where he has many lifelong friends. Jim attended school in Iliff and was known to be a passionate Iliff Bulldog, graduating in 1961. During his high school years, Jim excelled in all sports. Between participating in sports and listening to sportscasts on the radio, Jim developed a love for playing, watching, listening to, and eventually coaching sports that would last his entire life. On Sept. 11, 1965, he wed Lynn Anne Gallavan at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Iliff. They were happily married 44 years. They made their home in Greeley while he earned his Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1966. That fall, they moved back to Iliff and he began teaching at Iliff High School as a science teacher. Jim continued to teach and coach at Iliff and then Caliche for 35 years until his retirement. After that, he continued to work as the athletic director for the next 10 years. Jim taught science and physical education. He coached junior high sports, scouted for the high school teams and actively participated in all school functions throughout his career. Raised on a family farm, Jim developed a love for farming. Throughout his teaching career, Jim would farm on nights, weekends and summers. He actively worked on the farm throughout his illness. One of his greatest joys was to have his son, Darrin, nephews and eventually his grandkids work alongside him. Jim loved attending livestock sales, farm sales, and playing cards with the locals at Lu's. Jim enjoyed all kinds of sports throughout his lifetime. In his early years, he enjoyed playing on fast-pitch softball teams and later in life he enjoyed many golfing trips and Tuesday night golf league with friends. In addition, he faithfully supported and cheered on Iliff and Caliche teams. As a diehard fan, Jim attended many sporting events, including every Colorado State Basketball tournament since 1966, the NCAA Final Four, and numerous Broncos, Rockies and CU games, including several Bowl games. A passionate Phillies fan, he was able to travel to Philadelphia in October 2008 with his wife and three children to watch Game 3 of the World Series. Jim and Lynn also enjoyed taking in a baseball game in whatever city they were vacationing at the time. One trip took them to seven stadiums in 10 days. Jim and Lynn enjoyed traveling together, visiting almost every state. As much as he loved sports, his true passion was his family. Times spent with his wife, kids and grandkids were his most treasured. Special times included summertime family vacations, times at their home in Walden, or just being home with any number of them. Forever community minded, he was generous in actively supporting organizations. Jim was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Iliff Men's Club, Caliche Booster Club and Sterling Elks Lodge. He also served as executive director for Iliff Head Start. He counted among his good friends people all over northeastern Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Lynn of Iliff; daughter, Julie Kokes and husband Kent of Crook; son, Darrin Manuello and wife Donna of Iliff; daughter, Jami Martin and Chad Hopwood of Strasburg; grandchildren, Kirk, Taylor and Joshua Kokes, Kaitlyn, Brittany and Cody Manuello, Mitchell, Conner and Landen Martin and Brody Hopwood; brother, Don Manuello and wife Maren; sister, Judy Long and husband Dale; sister-in-law, Judy Schaefer and husband Jim; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was precded in death by his parents, Frank and Lela Manuello; and his parents-in-law, John and Sidney Gallavan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Jim Manuello Memorial Fund.
