Taylor, Jr., 84, Chanute, Kansas, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. He was born April 19, 1919 in Iola, Kansas, the son of James H. Sr. and Lena (Baylor) Taylor. He grew up in Iola and graduated from Iola High School in 1939. He attended Allen County Community College and later taught all eight grades at Somerset Rural School in Miami county. He enlisted in the US Army in July of 1942, serving in the Quartermaster Corps on Guadalcanal during World War II. When he returned from the service, he worked for a short time on a pipeline crew. He was then employed as an unlocated lineman for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and worked all over eastern Kansas. He retired with 33 years of service and served as president of the local communications Workers of American Union for 11 years. He continued to fix telephones and install jacks for people. He started selling fireworks from his garage in 1954 at Taylor's Discount Fireworks. He also sold memorial flowers and wreaths from his garage. Beginning in 1970, he owned and operated Taylor's Ice Dock, and soon started selling beer and bait. He also bought his first sno-cone machine in 1955 and worked at Kress stores all through southeast Kansas and Missouri. He was a member of othe First United Methodist Church, Chanute, KS. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Masonic Lodge in Iola, KS; a 50 year member of Scottish Rite Temple in Ft. Scott, KS, and the Mirza Shrine Temple in Pittsburg, KS; a member of the VFW and the American Legion, both in Chanute; and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and Communications Workers of America. On Sept. 30, 1941, he married Wilberta C. Moore at Trinity Methodist Church in Iola, Kansas. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Alicia Fickel and Patricia Busse, both of Chanute, KS; a son, George Taylor, Chanute, KS; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, David B. Taylor of Wichita, KS, and a sister, Cecilia Eastwood, of Arlington, TX. Funeral services will be at the First United Methodist Church, Chanute, KS, led by the Rev. Larry Myers. Burial, with Masonic burial rites, and with military honors, will be in Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, or to the Shriner's Hospital. ******************
