James Haney, who resided about ten miles west of this city was found dead in his barn Friday afternoon. The cause of his death, it is said, was due to an attack of heart failure. Mr. Haney had been helping his sons with the wheat harvest, and upon leaving the house after dinner apparently was in the best of health. It was indeed a sad shock to his wife, who was the first to discover his body lying lifeless on the barn floor. Mr. Haney was born in Ireland, November 27, 1846. While a mere boy he imigrated to America in the hope of bettering his condition. He first settled in Illinois in 1866. In 1878, becoming dissatisfied with his surroundings in Illinois he decided to try his fortune in Nebraska and accordingly homesteaded in west Butler where he continued to reside until his death. He was married to Miss Mary Hagan in 1872 and to this union was born nine children, six boys and three girls all of whom survive him together with his good wife who toiled and suffered with him in his struggles as an early pioneer of Butler county. Mr. Haney left his family well provided for, he being the owner of 940 acres of choice land in Butler and 160 acres in Sherman county, together with several thousand dollars worth of personal property and some life insurance. He waw a man of sterling qualities, was worshipped so to speak by his good wife and family and was highly respected by his neighbors and acquaintances on account of his honesty, integrity, hospitality and his high sense of justice, He was thrifty and economical and at the same time generous, being always ready to aid the unfortunate both by advice and financially. The funeral services were held Sunday at 10 o'clock at St. Mary's Church, Father Caraher conducting the services in the presence of a large concourse of friends, after which the remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery. JAMES HANEY AND CHILDREN. ```````````` Peoples Banner (David City, Nebr.), July 19, 1906, p. 5, col. 4 Found Dead James Haney Sr., of Summit township was found dead in his barn at noon Friday, July 13th, at the age of 60 years. Mr. Haney had been missing about the place during the forenoon, his wife not knowing of his whereabout began search with above results. Deceased moved to this country from Ireland in the year 1866 and settled in the state of Illinois, where he was married to his present wife. Mr. Haney, with his family, moved to Butler county, twenty-nine years ago and homesteaded the farm on which he lived at the time of his death. Through his shrewd financiering Mr. Haney had accumulated considerable property, owning at the time of his death, nearly one thousand acres of land. Nine children blessed their union, six boys and three girls, all of whom are living and all reside in this county with the exception of one son, Dave, who resides in Omaha. The funeral services were conducted Sunday July 15, at 10:30 a.m. from the Catholic church in David City, of which church he has been a sincere and faithful member since taking up his residence in Butler county. Interment in the Catholic cemetery at this place. The Banner extends sympathy to his wife and children in their sad hour of bereavement.
