He is 7 months of age; which would make his month of birth approximately February of 1870. The 1870 census was taken September of 1870. This is the only census record in which Jacob Hayes appears with Caroline. The young family is living next door to Jacob & Sarah Hall Absher; Caroline's mother & father. The only other census record for James is the 1880 census; age 11; should be age 10. He has four brothers; William, Benjamin, Louis & Elihue. Jacob Hayes is not recorded in the record with them. James, Caroline & his brothers are living beside Caroline's brother Lewis McDaniel & Martha Billings Absher with their young son, Coy & his grandparents Jacob & Sarah Hall Absher. There are no more records for James Hayes. I believe his burial site to be beside his mother Caroline. There is a grave marker at this time beside Caroline for Jacob Hayes. Jacob Hayes however is buried at the County Home Cemetery in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes, NC. I believe this site is actually where James Hayes is interred. The 1900 census records Caroline as divorced. James Hayes's brothers are buried at other cemeteries.
