| Description | : | Born in Headford, Galway County, Ireland. James was a fifer/bugler in the 54th British Infantry at age 12 and promoted to principal musician of the drum corps at age 16. He came to America in 1853 and in 1862 enlisted in Company E, 49th New York Infantry "Ellsworth Avengers" as principal musician. James contracted typhoid fever and was transferred to the Invalid Corps.
