ELLISON. James H. Ellison is a representative of one of the pioneer families of Saunders county and for many years has engaged in farming on section 17, Marietta precinct. He was born at Eagle Harbor, Michigan, On the 7th of March, 1865, of the marriage of James and Isabella Ellison, both of whom were natives of Ireland, though they were reared in New York state. In 1878 they came to Saunders county and the father took up the first homestead in Marietta precinct. He developed a good farm from what was a tract of wild prairie land when it came into his possession and thus aided in promoting the agricultural advancement of his community. He also helped to build the main line of the Union Pacific Railroad. For two years the family resided in a sod house, which at the end of that time was replaced by a small frame shack. It was necessary to go to Plattsmouth for provisions and there were many inconveniences and often hard- ships to be endured. He persevered, however, in the work of improving his farm and at the time of his death owned two hundred acres of good land. He was a populist in his political belief and a Presbyterian in religious faith. He died July 23, 1907, and his wife passed away on the 19th of April, 1892. James H. Ellison was reared at home and attended the public schools in his boyhood during a short period of each winter. He then turned his entire attention to helping with the farm work and when twenty-five years old began his independent career. He now owns a good farm of one hundred acres on section 17, Marietta precinct, and its excellent improvements indicate his prosperity. He is prompt and energetic in carrying on the farm work and seldom fails to harvest good crops, while he derives a substantial addition to his income from the sale of his stock. On the 24th of August, 1893, Mr. Ellison was united in marriage to Miss Myrtle Smith, a daughter of Charles D. Smith, formerly of Fennimore, Wisconsin. Two children have been born to this union, namely: James Donald, born July 21, 1900, who is attending the Wahoo high schools; and Dorothy Autumn born October 1, 1905, who is a pupil in the country school. Mrs. Ellison was born in Grant County, Wisconsin, August 25, 1873, and was graduated at the Fennimore (Wis.) high school, and during her young womanhood she was a teacher in the public school. She is a Presbyterian and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Ellison holds membership in the Masonic order at Wahoo, belonging to both the blue lodge and chapter, and he is also connected with the Ancient Order of United Workmen at Wahoo. In politics he votes independently, refusing to be bound by the dictates of a party leader. He is now serving as a member of the school board, of which he has been a member for thirty years, or since he was twenty-one, and he takes the interest of a good citizen in everything relating to the public welfare. His religious faith is that of the Presbyterian church. He attributes his success to his willingness to work hard and his constant study to increase his ability as an agriculturist. WAHOO DEMOCRAT, WAHOO, NEBRASKA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1934 James Ellison Buried Thursday The last sad rites for Jas. H. Ellison, pioneer settler of Marietta precinct, occurred fron the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. E.J. Nickerson in charge, assisted by Rev. Horton of Madison, a former pastor of the Marietta Presbyterian church. The church was banked deep with beautiful floral offerings which filled all the available space in front of the pulpit. With Mrs. Chas. Prokop at the pipe organ, a choir composed of Mrs. Frank Schroeder, Mrs. Roland Anderson, Messrs. Clyde R. Worral and A.J. Brodahl rendered a program of old familiar hymns. Mrs. C.F. Galloway contributed a solo, "Face to Face" in her extremely pleasant manner. Rev. Horton read the text and the Rev. E.J. Nickerson delivered the sermon paying a feeling tribute to the memory of the departed. The church was crowded to its utmost capacity with friends and neighbors who had known the deceased and his family for years. One of the longest funeral processions seen here in years accompanied the remains to their last resting place in the Sunrise cemetary where the Masonic lodge with N.O. Waither, as acting master of the lodge, consigned the remains to their last resting place. The following were the active pall bearers: Paul Seidel, Carlos Shires, Clarence Seely, Martin Hult, Dr. J.R. Thompson and Ira Cheney. The honorary pall bearers where as follows: Wm. Ptacek, Jay Adams, D.A. Moyer, A.W. Christensen, Albert Bensen, Harry Nelsen, Elmer Horak, Wm. Brown, Ira Thompson, and Thos. Berg. Thus another and highly respected citizen and old settler of the community has passed to the beyond with the deep regret of friends and neighbors who sincerely mourn his passing. The large attendance on the final rites and the long funeral procession speak louder than words of the esteem in which he was held by those who had the pleasure of knowing him in life. FUNERAL SERVICES FOR JAMES ELLISON Services for James Henry Ellison were held at the First Presbyterian Church in Wahoo at two o'clock, Thursday afternoon, Oct. 4th, 1934. Rev. E.J. Nickerson pastor of the church officiated, assisted by Rev. S.N. Horton of Madison, Nebraska and Rev. Harold Bryant of Wahoo. Internment was at Sunrise Cemetery. The deceased was the son of James and Isabel Ellison and was born at Eagle Harbor, Michigan March 7, 1886. (should be March 7, 1864) He died at his home in Marietta precinct, Oct. 1, 1934 at the age of 68 years, 6 months and 24 days. He was the eldest of a family of five children and came with his parents to Nebraska when less than two years of age. His entire life was spent on the farm. He was thoroughly a farmer, never wishing to retire from farm life. He grew to manhood on the homestead of his father, the first permenant settler of Marietta precinct. Here he attended rural school and church and assumed an active interest in the affairs of the community. He served on the school board of District 67 over a period of thirty years and at the time of his death was president of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company. On the 24th of August 1893 he was united in marriage to Myrtle L. Smith of Fennimore, Wisconsin. Two children were born to them, James Donald of Wahoo and Dorothy Autumn residing at home. Mr. Ellison's life was characterized by a spirit of youthfulness, he never seemed to grow old, he loved his home and its companionships. The friendship and association with young men of the neighborhood afforded him the keenest enjoyment and satisfaction. Their misfortunes and disappointments were shared by him and he joyed in their success and advancement. Sports and athletics held an abosorbing fascination for him and in his younger days was always a member of some local baseball team. He was a member of Wahoo Lodge A. F. and A. M. No. 59 and the worthy goals of this great order, for a period of 46 years, constituted the rule and guide of his life. Though not a member of the church organization he was thoroughly acquainted with the doctrines of the Presbyterian faith and in his life these doctrines meant more than mere form or ceremony. The discouragements and annoyances of life never marred his cheerful optimism. He cherished no ill will toward any man but believed without question that humility, mercy and integrity were the just requirements of the Supreme Ruler. Besides his wife hie is survived by his son Donald and daughter-in-law Laura, his daughter Dorothy, his two grand daughters Donna Jean and Betty Ann Ellison, also three sisters Mrs. Rob't Love of Amory, Miss, Mrs, Sarah Stockert of Lincoln, Nebr., and Mrs. Geo. Bell of Colon, Nebr.
