James Whitt passed away at his home in Albion, Saturday January 3, at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 13 days. His death marks the passing of another of the honored Veterans of the Civil War. James Whitt was born in West Virginia, September 21, 1842. When a small boy, his parents Timothy and Nancy Whitt, moved to Missouri. His father was a minister of the gospel and served the Baptist church in this capacity for thirty-five years. He was a veteran of the Civil War and of Indian Wars. Being a brave and couragous soldier he build for himself an enviable war record. In 1861 he enlisted with the 3rd Missouri Cavalry of the Union Army Co. H 13 Missouri Cav., serving with this unit until mustered out in the autumn of 1864. He immediately re-enlisted in the 13th Missouri Cavalry, serving until the end of the war. He was then sent west to take part in the Indian Campaign where at various times he served under General Custer, General Blunt and General Lupton, whose contingents patroled the Logan, Colorado Territory. Sterling Colorado is built on the old camp grounds they once occupied. He helped in the building of Fort Morgan and Fort Lupton, and in 1865 was engaged in battles with Chief Rain-in-the-face and Chief Sitting bull. This is the passing of the last of a family of five brothers and one sister, the brothers all being Veterans of the Civil War. In the year 1870 James Whitt was united in marriage to Rebecca Gibson at Camden, Missouri, where they resided until 1882. From Camden the family moved to Boone County and in 1908 established a home in Albion. To this union nine children were born, two sons and seven daughters. Three of these have passed on. One son died in infancy and two daughters, Mrs. Lettie Roff and Mrs. Minnie Hammond died in recent years. Those remaining to mourn his loss are his loving wife, his daughters, Mrs. Delia Meusborn, of Brighton Colorado, Mrs. Ella Wagner of Omaha, Mrs. Franie Simpson of Fullerton, Mrs. Louise Todd, and Mrs. Mary Louden of Albion and his son, William Whitt of this city. Besides these he leaves seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 2:30 Monday afternoon, messages being given by D.J.Poynter and the pastor, Rev. H.O.King. Full military honors were accorded the deceased by the Manderson Lehr Post of the American Legion, Chaplain Harry Swanson in charge. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. James died on January 3, 1931 in Boone County, Albion, Nebraska at the age of 88.
