Hill, or "Uncle Jimmie" as he was so familiarly known, recalls the fact that, with the exception of Mrs. Thomas Bonebright and Andrew J. Brewer, the respective children of Wilson and Jackson Brewer, he was probably the oldest resident of the surviving pioneers. He came to this county about the year 1853 with his mother, Mrs. Isaac (Jane) Hill, a widow, and he was the youngest of the family. The Hills, Isaac and Jane, were natives of Virginia, and married in the year 1824. The husband died in 1842, and in the year 1847 Mrs. Hill with her eight children came to Iowa, stopping first in the southeast part of the state and then emigrating to Hamilton county and settling upon the farm in the Saratogo, or Tunnel Mill, neighborhood, which farm she subsequently sold to her son, James, who owned it at the time of his death. His mother died in March 1885. "Uncle Jimmie" was married in the early sixties and took his bride to the home farm, where their ten children were born, one of whom died in infancy. The other children all survived their father and five of them are now residents of this county. The mother died during the month of May 1887. "Uncle Jimmie" never remarried, living the remainder of his days either upon the old farm, with his children, or in Webster City, except for ayear spent in the military service in 1862-1863 as a member of Company C of the Northern Iowa Brigade. he lived his life of over 75 years a resident of this county and in a literal sense he grew up with the country, witnessing all the changes from the earliest of pioneer life. He saw the virgin land, prairie and timber, the log huts with their fireplaces, candles for light, and the rough winding roads and their slow moving oxen teams give way to the now wonderfully improved farms, the homes with modern improvements, including the telephone, electric lights and rural delivery, the winding roads to the present highly improved and well graded highways, and the oxen team to the present automobile possessed and extensively used by almost every family. "Uncle Jimmie" witnessed the development of Webster City from a mere hamlet to the present splendid city, all in the achievement of the enterprising men and women who came here in those early days and to whom we of the present generation "can wll take off our hats" in the record of things accomplished. "Uncle Jimmie," though a little man in stature, was a big man in all his dealings with his fellow men and "one whose word was as good as his bond." He was a character typical of the pioneer life of the friendly and neighborly sort. The memory of him and his familiar figure with his friendly greeting will long remain to so many who best knew him.
