While residing in York District, he enlisted during 1775 under Col. Neel. In June or July 1776, he was under Capt. Thomas Kirkpatrick and Col. Neel. He also served under Maj. Ross on the Georgia Expedition and was in the Battle of Briar Creek. He went with Hammond on an expedition against the Creek Indians. Shortly after the fall of Charleston, he was appointed Lieutenant under Col. Bratton. He was a captain under Sumter and was in the battles at Ramsour's Mill, Williamson's Plantation, Rocky Mount, Hanging Rock (where he was shot through the body) and Blackstock's Plantation. He was captured by Tories while at home and exchanged. A.A.3998; 1318; (A.A. 6252). South Carolina Federal Pension Report 1835, Washington, Printed by Duff Green 1835.
