Tope, of near Carter, were grieved to learn of his death at the ranch on Thursday morning at 1 o'clock, death summoning him after an illness of several years, death being directly caused by cancer, although he had been bedfast for about eight years. He had been in very poor health for the past three months or more and it was only a question of time until his summons came. Mr. Tope had been a resident of this county since the spring of 1910 and was well known and highly respected by all who knew him. James J. Tope was born on Nov. 5, 1865, Jackson, Ohio, and passed away Jan. 17, 1933, being 67 years, 2 months and 12 days old. He spent his early life in the eastern states, coming to Chouteau county in 1910, taking up a homestead in the Carter section, where he has since resided and where he engaged in farming until forced to give it up on account of illness. He was united in marriage at an early age and to this union were born one son, Roy Tope, and one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Brown, of the Carter community. He is survived by his widow and two children; two brothers, G. W. Tope of Fort Benton, and William E. Tope of Muskegan Hts., Mich., and one sister, Mrs. Theresa Vanfosen of Jackson, Ohio. Funeral services were held from the Louther chapel on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. and were attended by many old time friends who gathered to pay their last respects. The services were conducted by Rev. Dan W. Brown, pastor of the Christian Church of this city, of which he was a member. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.
