Brown, a resident of Chouteau county for the past fifty years, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Engum, seven miles west of Fort Benton. She suffered a heart attack and died suddenly Thursday. Ethel A. Tope was born Aug. 13, 1888, at Murray, Indiana, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Tope. She spent her early life in Indiana and was united in marriage at Bluffton, Indiana, in 1905, to Arthur Brown. The family came to Montana in 1910 and took up a homestead in the Tunis section, close to her parents' homestead. Mrs. Brown was the first matron of dormitory operated for the Chouteau county high school in 1922, and served for two years. She was also a very active member of civic affairs in the Tunis area and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Since 1924 she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Engum. Mrs. Brown was well known and highly respected by all who knew her. She is a member of the Christian Church. For quite a number of years she resided in this city, later moving to the ranch with her daughter. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Engum and Mrs. Bernice Flatt, both of this city. She is also survived by a brother, Roy Tope, of Careywood, Idaho, and by three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held from the Benton Funeral Home chapel at two o'clock Monday afternoon. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.
