Jim was born Nov. 25, 1912, the son of Peter E. and Rena (Borgman) Vermeer, and grew up on a farm a few miles southeast of Sioux Center. He received a bachelor of science degree in agricultural business from Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) in Ames, Iowa, in 1939, and a master of science degree in farm management from Louisiana State University in 1940. He worked with the Farm Security Administration, U.S.D.A. in Washington D.C. and the regional office in Milwaukee, Wis. He served as program analyst in the Tri-State region of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan until entering the U.S. Navy during World War II. For three years, he was the officer in charge of gun crews on merchant ships delivering munitions and supplies worldwide, from Russia to North Africa and the Pacific islands. He was then transferred to the Naval Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg, Pa. He returned to civilian life and the U.S.D.A., Bureau of Agricultural Economics in Washington D.C., where he remained with the B.A.E. and its succeeding agencies until his retirement in 1976. While living in both Arlington, Va. and then Radford, Va., he was involved in both church and community affairs. He helped organize a new Presbyterian congregation, named the Church of the Covenant, when the mother church outgrew facilities. He served as trustee and elder of the Covenant congregation. After moving to Radford, he became a member of the Presbyterian Church of Radford, where he served as an elder. He also was a member of the Lion's Club of Radford, where he served as treasurer. He was a member of the Emergency Medical Services board and for one year was chairman of the Assessment Review board. In 1992, the couple became the first occupants of the Regency Apartments in Sioux Center. He spent many happy hours playing golf and analyzing stocks and the stock market. He maintained a lifelong love of gardening and landscaping. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David and Harold E.; and a brother and his wife, Bernard and Wilmina Vermeer. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to the New Nursing Home Project, in care of the Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation. -Obituary from The Sioux City Journal (1/22/2005)
