The death of James John occurred at his home in Dodge Township on Sunday, October 14. The decease of this venerable old citizen was to be expected, any time, as he had passed the allotted four score and ten years over sixteen years ago (sic). He has passed to his long rest full of years and with the kindly regard and respect of all that knew him. James John was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1801. He remained there on his home farm of 18 years, when he removed to Muskingum County, Ohio then the far west of this country. Ohio was his home until 1853, when he came to Iowa, settling in Dodge township in 1855, where he has constantly lived since then, being one of the substantial farmers of Boone county, his homestead consisting of over 500 acres. He was married in Ohio, in 1828, to Mary Gibbons, who died in 1873. Several children, all grown, survive and are respected citizens of the county. Uncle James John, as he was usually called, was long a familiar figure in Boone. As old age came on he retired from the active work of the farm and was frequently in Boone. Of late years, however, his visits became less frequent and the news of his death was not a surprise. There was no particular ailment that carried him off, but the sands of life ran down and he passed away full of years, leaving the record of an honest man and useful citizen. The funeral services were held at his residence Tuesday morning and the remains interred in Linwood cemetery.
