He was born Sept. 25, 1930, at Toledo Hospital, the firstborn of the late John J. and Florence P (Kowalski) Voss. He married Rita C. Irving on Feb. 1, 1958, at St. Patrick's Church in Grand Rapids, and they were divorced. James lived in Toledo until he was five years old. Read More	James Joseph Voss, 86. died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born Sept. 25, 1930, at Toledo Hospital, the firstborn of the late John J. and Florence P (Kowalski) Voss. He married Rita C. Irving on Feb. 1, 1958, at St. Patrick's Church in Grand Rapids, and they were divorced. James lived in Toledo until he was five years old. His family moved to a farm on County Road V in Liberty Center, Henry County. He was a graduate of Liberty Center High School in 1948. He loved football. and was a left tackle for four years. He was a member of both the Glee Club and Agriculture for four years. James enlisted in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-55. He traveled from Kessler Base, Miss., Camp Gordon, Ga., and Williams Base, Ariz. He also spent two years in Alaska at Elmandorf Base, and, lastly, Pope Air Force Base, Fort Bragg, N.C. He graduated and worked as an Air Force policeman. He later became Corporal of the Guard, where he guarded planes, bases, and prisoners. In civilian life, he tried many jobs – Campbell's Soup in Napoleon, Doehler Jarvis and American Ship Building, both in Toledo, and Universal Crank Shaft in Bowling Green – until he found a home at McCord's in Wauseon, where he worked there on the shipping docks for 33 years. Even though he worked in the public workplace, he also enjoyed farming for his parents for many years. Though divorced, James still loved God and his family, and kept his focus on them. He was a member of St. Caspar's Catholic Church in Wauseon for many years. For the last years of his life he was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Napoleon. He was a giver to the Kingdom of God for many years. He also had a card ministry. He would find just the right card to encourage someone. James spent several years as a caregiver for his youngest daughter, Cathy, who was very sick. He gave his all – time, energy, and finances – to keep her and her family going. He loved being a grandpa, great-grandpa, and dad to many. He loved his brother and sisters, his nieces and nephews. He didn't say a lot, but always listened and tried to keep in touch and be there, enjoying every family get-together. In his later years, James' walk with God grew closer and richer. He read and listened to the Bible a lot. He also prayed a lot. James leaves a huge vacant space in our family and home. Only a lot of time will be able to ease the hurt of missing him. He is survived by his daughter, Julie (Daniel) Munger; brother, Lawrence (June) Voss; sister, Carol Thome; grandchildren, Cecilia (Nic) Williams, James (Lindsay) Miller, Nicholas (Sarah) Bryan, Amanda (DJ) Johnson, and Tiffany (Matthew) Laney; 16 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his little napping buddy, Abby, our dog. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Catherine Miller; sister, Teresa (Bill) Posey; and brother-in-law, Joseph Thome. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Napoleon, with Fr. Douglas Garand officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Augustine. Visitation for James will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016, at Walker-Hoening Mortuary, 333 W. Main St., Napoleon. Memorials are suggested to St. Augustine Catholic Church, the American Legion or the American Cancer Society.
