James Kearney was born in Davenport, Iowa, July 23, 1849, and came with his parents to the Kearney homestead west of DeWitt when a boy of eight years. January 6, 1877 he was united in marriage to Miss Susan Crowley of Lanesborough, Minn., and they lived on the Kearney farm west of DeWitt until 1901 when they purchased a home in DeWitt. Mrs. Kearney died December 24, 1925. Mr. Kearney died Tuesday, December 13th at the home of his son John Kearney, living north of DeWitt. He is survived by three sons, Frank, Michael and John Kearney, and two daughters Mrs. T.F. Crowley and Miss B. Kearney all living in the vicinity of DeWitt. There are also seventeen grandchildren.
