Born 1820 in Accomack County, VA, James was the son of William Rayfield (1775, d. July 1826) and Susanna Kelly (1780, d. before 31 May 1830). James was named in his father's will on 5 Feb 1826 at Accomack County, VA. He was shown as a son James Rayfield in the will of William Rayfield, wife Susannah. Witt: Alexander S. Bird & Spencer Lewis. On 31 Aug 1835 in Accomack County, VA, Richard J. Ayres was named guardian of Susan K. Rayfield and James K. Rayfield, orphans of William Rayfield. Bond was set at $2,000. James K. Rayfield married 10 Feb 1843, Amelia S. 'Milly' Sterling, daughter of Aaron 'Hickory' Sterling and Elizabeth Howard. They were the parents of son, William Aaron Rayfield. In 1850, James was a mariner, head of a household in Somerset County, MD. In 1860, he was a merchant; in 1870, a huckster; in 1880, a wind merchant, all in Crisfield, Somerset County, MD. In his will (4 Apr 1883; 10 Apr 1883 Som Wills SCL5:499-500), he named wife Amelia, son William A. Rayfield, and grandson James K. Rayfield to whom he bequeathed property in Crisfield occupied as a storehouse; Executor to be William S. Hodson. Excerpts: "1) The share of my estate which the law gives to my wife, Amelia Rayfield. 2) I give unto my grandson and namesake, James K. Rayfield, Jr., the use of my real estate, with the improvements thereon, on the Pier in Crisfield on the corner of Main Street and Hearn's Alley, now occupied by Alonzo R. Horsey, as a storehouse, as long as my said grandson shall live, and at his death I devise the same to the children of my said grandson, if any, living at his death, and if none shall be living at his death, I then devise the same to the nearest relatives of the said James, and I also bequeath unto my said grandson James, the sum of Five Hundred Dollars in money. 3) I devise all the rest and residue of my estate, of whatever nature, real, personal and mixed, to my son, William A. Rayfield, to him & his heirs forever." James K.
