Read More	News story/obituary from Find A Grave Contributor: Julia Kinsey (48922386) Big Timber Pioneer, 4 July 1912 James Kelsey Succumbs to Injuries Sustained by Falling off Loaded Wagon James Kelsey, aged 63 years, a native of Indiana, died last Sunday evening at the home of Mrs. Ladow, beyond Howie, near the Sweet Grass river, as the result of an accident, having fallen from a wagon loaded with lumber. Mr. Kelsey, who was the father of J. A. Kelsey, an old resident of the county, arrived only a couple of months ago from the east. He made his home with his son, whose house was recently destroyed by fire. Last Saturday he came to town after a load of lumber and started on the return trip Sunday morning. When within a few miles of his son's place he attempted to set the brake of the wagon and in doing so had to reach for the rope fastened to the brake staff. He lost his balance and fell off the wagon, striking on his head and side. The team wandered off some distance and turned from the road and began to graze. Is Found By Small Boys Several hours after the accident occurred a couple of small boys named Peterson passed along the road and saw the team. Proceeding a little farther they found Mr. Kelsey, whom ay first they thought to be intoxicated because of his peculiar actions. Answering his calls, they went to him and the told them what had occurred and asked that they go after assistance. This they did, going to the home of Mrs. Ladow, whom they informed of the man's plight. The lady accompanied them to where the old gentleman was. The boys then went after the horses and wagon. With the assistance of the boys, Mrs. Ladow managed to get the man onto the wagon and he was taken to her home, after which the boys were dispatched with the team to the home of the younger Mr. Kelsey, who was told of the accident. Tells About Accident Believing his father to be but slightly injured, Mr. Kelsey took a lighter wagon and drove to where his father was, intending to take him home. When he reached his parent he found him to be suffering intensely, although no external injuries were apparent. As the old gentleman could not be moved, the son sent to town for Dr. Claiborn, who responded and was soon by the side of the injured man. He found him beyond help, although he was still conscious and told how the accident occurred. He said that in reaching for the brake one of the horses made a jump, thinking it was to be struck. This caused him to fall from the wagon, but to one side of the road and the wheels missed him as he lay on the ground. Mr. Kelsey lived about ten hours after. being hurt. The body was brought to town and buried here Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Kelsey was a survivor of the civil war, having served in a regiment recruited in his native state. Only about two weeks ago he made application for a pension under the new law. The papers are now at Washington. Dr. Claiborn said death was due to internal injuries.
