March 5, 2013 ******** Alton Democrat; March 31, 1949 PROMINENT FARMER OF ALTON VICINITY GONE--JAMES KINNEY WAS LIFE RESIDENT HERE On Thursday afternoon, March 24, at 3:30 P.M. the Alton community was grieved by the passing of one of its life-long residents, James Kinney. He passed away at his home after an illness of several months. Solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Chapel at Alton Saturday morning. Interment was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery. James Kinney was born at Alton on June 11, 1878, the oldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael and Margaret (Allen) Kinney of Alton. On February 26, 1906 he married Catherine Arens of Alton and settled on the farm south of Alton adjacent to the place of his birth. He resided on this farm until the time of his death. Surviving him are the widow and eight children: Joseph Kinney, Bernard of Alton; Magdalen of Chicago, Illinois; Alberta, Mrs. Everild Niehus of Kingsley; Robert of Sheldon; Viola, Mrs. Albert Hansen of Alton; James Jr. of Hospers; Ivo of Sioux City and eight grandchildren. Two sisters: Mrs. Jake List of Granville, Iowa and Mrs. Frank Arens of Dolton, South Dakota also survive. Mr. Kinney was a loving husband and father deeply devoted to his wife and family and will be missed greatly by them as well as a host of friends.
