Tesla arrived in the US about 1884 in New York, at the age of 28. Shortly thereafter, Tesla began working for Thomas Edison, the father of (among other inventions) 'DC' electrical power. By 1901, (when James was 11), Tesla had quit working for Edison and began construction of his 'Wardenclyfe Tower' at Shoreham, Suffolk, New York. ---------------------------------------------------------- In the 1910 census, James (20) is listed as residing in Green, Ross County, Ohio, with his father and step mother. About 1911, James (21), arrived in Burlington, Skagit County, Washingon. This date is estimated, based on James's residence in 1910, (e.g. Ohio), the time needed circa 1910 to travel from Ohio to Washington, the date of James's subsequent marriage with Ruth Chase and a grandson's estimate of the amount of time that would be needed to court his Grandmother. On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1913, James Lawrence Marzluff married Ruth Fern Chase (1895 - Iowa, 1994 - Washington). They remained married for 62 years, celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary (50 years) on November 27, 1963. On July 28, 1914, World War I began. Also in 1914, the Marzluff family resided in Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington. ---------------------------------------------------------- Of historical note, on May 7, 1915, RMS Lusitania was sunk off the coast of Scotland on a voyage between New York, USA and Liverpool, England, (by the German 'U-boat' U-20), resulting in 1200 deaths. ---------------------------------------------------------- James Lawrence Marzluff registered for the WW I draft on June 5, 1917 in Skagit County, Washington. ---------------------------------------------------------- Also of historic note, (and of a personal note, as James's wife, Ruth Marzluff, was a nurse), the 'Spanish Flu' epidemic occured from the winter of 1918 through the winter of 1919. ---------------------------------------------------------- On October 27, 1918, the child that the Marzluff family would later adopt, daughter Josephine V Marzluff (1918, 1997), was born in Iowa as Gretchen Josephine Chase. The 1920 US census indicates the Marzluff family as living in Burlington, Skagit County, Washington. The Marzluff family adopted their daughter about 1922, renaming her to Josephine V Marzluff. Also in 1922, power (AC electrical) transmission lines were established across Washington's Cascade mountains. James Lawrence worked for the Puget Sound Power & Light Company (formed in 1919 and in continuous operation until 1997 when it, " . . . merged with the Seattle gas distributor, Washington Energy Company, to form Puget Sound Energy."). While he would in later years contribute to the management of his company, in the 1920s and 1930s, he labored as a 'Line Supervisor', supervising the installation of power lines throughout the Puget Sound region. On Tuesday, October 29, 1929, the New York stock exchange experienced it's historic crash, which in turn precipitated the world's economic 'Great Depression' of the 1930s. By 1942, the family resided in Renton, King County, Washington. Also in 1942, James registered for the WW II draft, (no doubt irking his wife). ----------------------------------------------------------- On Jan 7, 1943, when James was 52, the father of modern AC electrical current, Nikola Tesla, died alone in a New York hotel. ----------------------------------------------------------- In 1954, James became a grandfather at the age of 64. James Lawrence Marzluff retired from the Puget Sound Power & Light Company circa 1955, after 25 years. During his career, James saw the region under his professional influence transformed by the distribution of electrical power to it's homes. ---------------------------------------------------------- About ten years later, in a conversation seeking to convey why he and the men under him had risked their lives to bring power lines to homes during the winter, James said, " . . . every winter a home was found with everyone inside frozen to death." James had worked as a Line Supervisor for PP&L in the 1920s and 1930s. He and his men raced against time to provide electrical power that would heat homes during winter. In those days, if you were too old, (or sick), to chop fire wood, and your house wasn't heated, it became the same temperature as the outside, and depending on the season, one could and sometimes did, freeze. ---------------------------------------------------------- James's last birthday (his 85th) occurred on September 15, 1975. James passed at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 29 days, on February 14, 1976, at his home in Burlington. James was buried at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery. Eighteen years later, his wife of 62 years, 2 months and 17 days, was buried next to him. James lived to see America heated, (and lit), by the electrical power he spent his career establishing the distribution of, to homes throughout Washington's Pugent Sound region. His wilingness to work alongside his men during the wet, winter months of northern Washington, ensured the installation of power lines in his region proceeded as safely and quickly as possible, which helped save lives.
