Read More	Born Ruth Fern Chase on May 16, 1895 in Havelock (Washington Township), Pocahontas County, Iowa, USA to father Joseph Lapham Chase (1870, 1934) and mother Arvilla May Marchant (1877, 1954). Ruth would have been 8 years old on the day of that first flight, December 17, 1903. --------------------------------------------------------- Also of historical note and potential future relavance to Ruth, (as it turnd out), then President Theodore Rosevelt formed the US Forest Service in 1905. ---------------------------------------------------------- Around 1907, her father determined to move to the state of Washington. Anxious that his family not loose the last opportunity to do so, the family travelled to St. Louis, Missouri, where Joe Chase loaded his family into Covered Wagons to make the overland trip to the west coast and the state of Washington. Ruth was about 12 at the time of this trip, and remembered to her grandson close to 70 years later: walking most of the way beside their wagon (which ". . . made her tired."), taking care of the baby, (e.g. Lewis A Chase (b. 1905), which " . . . was fun".), once seeing Indians on horseback in the distance, (" . . . on a hill overlooking the trail."), and falling in love with the outdoors, especially " . . . each day, seeing the most beautiful wildflowers I would ever see."). She also remembered how hard the climb up the Rockies was. The 1910 US census indicates her family as residing in Skagit County, Washington. As it turned out, it was extremely fortuitist that the family was 'out of the woods' by then. ----------------------------------------------------------- Of historical note, between 1908 and 1910, the northern Rockies had been under historic drought conditions. On July 26, 1910, a severe lightning storm over the northern Rockies ignited hundreds of forest fires. These became known as the 'Great Burn of 1910'. The fledgling US Forest Service fought this blaze, and lost 78 men to the fire plus dozens more to injuries. The town of Wallace, Montana, was evacuated and burned to the ground on August 20, 1910. The US Army's 'Buffalo Soldiers' lit a backfire which succeeded in saving the town of Avery, Montana. The town of Taft, Montana, (a 'shanty town'), however, burned. ---------------------------------------------------------- Ruth was 15 years old at the time of the Great Burn of 1910. Her family had passed through this region in a Covered Wagon, before the fire but during the drought. Seventy years later she remembered how hot and dry the mountans were, and how she sorrowed afterwards for the men lost. This experience may have been some of the motivation behind Ruth becoming a nurse. Doing so paid off when America entered WW I and simultaneously endured the 'Spanish Flu' pandemic of 1918-19. Ruth valued her training and used it in local hospitals, braving a pandemic that has been compared to the Bubonic Plague of the Medieval Age. On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1913, Ruth Chase married James Lawrence Marzluff (1890 - Ohio, 1976 - Washington), at the age of 18. Ruth and James adopted a daughter, whom they named Josephine V Marzluff (1918, 1997), circa 1922. ----------------------------------------------------------- On Tuesday, October 29, 1929, the New York stock market endured it's historic crash, which in turn precipitated the world's economic 'Great Depression' of the 1930s. ----------------------------------------------------------- The couple was extremely close and celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, (e.g. 50 years), in Burlington, Skagit County, Washington, on November 27, 1963. Ruth was very protective of her husband's health, insisting he engage in periodic exercise on the golf course during his retirement years. The couple spent their retirement winters in Palm Springs, CA, returning to Burlington, WA each spring. To make this trip, the couple would travel on US Hiway 99E, stopping in Portland, OR for several days each trip, to visit with their daughter and her family. Husband James Lawrence Marzluff passed on February 14, 1976, when Ruth was 80 years of age. In 1978, at 83, Ruth was diagnosed with 'Congestive Heart Failure', (a chronic and fatal disease). Ruth's health lasted for 15 years. In 1993, Ruth returned home from convalscense at a local nursing home following release from a local hospital where she had been succesfully treated for pnuemonia. Her life long attention to health enabled Ruth to spend her last (99th) birthday with her family at her home in Burlington, on May 16, 1994. Under the care of the Personal Representative of her Estate, Beneficiary of her Last Will & Testamont and nephew, Joseph Leighton Chase, Ruth passed at her home the evening of September 17, 1994, at the age of 99 years, 4 months and 1 day. The cause of death was listed as, 'Congestive Heart Failure induced Pnuemonia'. Ruth Chase was buried next to her beloved husband, 'Jim' Marzluff, at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery, where she was eulogized by family.
