Authorities said dust from cars in front of McDowell may have obscured his vision. He was thrown through the windshield by the impact. Services for McDowell will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Silver Creek church. The body is at Shelly funeral home, Manchester. He was born Sept. 20, 1938, on a farm near Masonville. He attended Monti consolidated schools and was graduated from Coggon high school in 1956. He had been working on farm with his father. Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Randall and Gerald, at home; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George McDowell and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Emerson of Ryan." McDowell, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy McDowell of Masonville, was killed about 1 a.m. Sunday wen his car crashed into a railroad underpass in Coggon. Coggon Marshall Ralph R. Snodgrass said McDowell died in the car moments after the left front of the auto struck a piling of the underpass. The left front wheel was snapped from the car and continued on down the road, and the left front headlight was plunged back to the car door in the crash. The auto whipped around in the road and came to rest facing the direction from which it had come. There was speculation that dust from cars ahead, obscured young McDowell's vision of the underpass. The youth had attended the Jones county fair in Monticello with friends, leaving his car at Coggon. He had returned and was en-route home when the car crashed. James L. McDowell was born Sept. 20, 1938, on a farm near Masonville. He attended Monti consolidated school and was graduated from Coggon high school with the class of 1956. Since then he had been working on his father's farm 8 1/2 miles southwest of Masonville. He was a member of the Silver Creek Methodist church. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy McDowell; two brothers, Gerald and Randall at home; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George McDowell of Manchester; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Emerson, and a number of aunts, uncles and other relatives. Funeral services were Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Silver Creek church, with the Rev. Paul Brown officiating. Burial was made in the Silver Creek cemetery. McDowell Killed in Car Accident West of Coggon (Aug 25, 1957 handwritten) James LeRoy McDowell, 18, of near Masonville, was killed instantly Sunday morning in a one-car accident at the west edge of Coggon. Funeral services will be held Tuessay at 2 p.m. with the Shelley Funeral home of Manchester in charge. The accident occurred at approximately 12:55 a.m. Sunday. Mr. McDowell, driving alone in his car, apparently hit the pilings of an underpass on a curve near Coggon. He was born Sept. 20, 1938 on a farm near Masonville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy McDowell. He attended the Monti consolidated school and graduated in 1956 from the Coggon high school. Since his graduation, he has been working on his father's farm near Masonville. He is survived by his parents and two brothers, Gerald and Randall at home; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George McDowell of Manchester and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Emerson of Ryan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Silver Creek Methodist church and burial will be in the Silver Creek cemetery. The Rev. Paul Brown, pastor of the church, will be in charge.
