James Lessard committed suicide at his home at Red Owl last week by shooting himself above the right temple. The lifeless body was discovered Friday afternoon by a neighbor, and from the condition of the same the deed had been committed several days previous. Coroner Leonard was notified and immediately went out and empanelled a jury which, after investigation found that the deceased had come to his death from a gunshot wound inflicted by his own hand. A note was found which read as follows: "I am losing my mind, good bye, don't worry" --Signed, Jim. The jury consisted of Messrs. W. A. Thurston, Wm. Warinski and Dea Baldwin. The remains were brought here early Sunday morning and placed in the Anderson undertaking parlor, where they were prepared for the funeral which was held Monday morning at 10 o'clock. The services were conducted at the grave in the Catholic cemetery by the Rev. Father Columban. Deceased was thirty-four years, seven months and seventeen days of age, was well to do and exceptionally well liked by all his neighbors. He had been a resident in the Red Owl country for about eleven years. He is survived by his father and mother who reside at Underwood, two sisters at Wasta and one sister in Lead. All were present at the funeral. BLACK HILLS PRESS, June 17, 1920, front page: JAMES LESSARD COMMITS SUICIDE NEAR RED OWL Coroner Fred Leonard and Sheriff Wesgate were called to the Red Owl country last Saturday to investigate the death of James Lessard, who was found dead at his home. When they got there a coroner's jury composed of Wm. Thurston, Dea Baldwin, Wm. Warinshi was called and returned a verdict that the man had come to his death by a gunshot wound inflicted by his own hand. It was thought that he had committed the act about Wednesday of last week. The body was brought to Sturgis and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. DEATH: According to family, James was kicked in the head by a horse. This was thought to have affected his mind thereby causing him to take his own life. Although his death certificate says he died on the 12th of June, 1920 (the day the sheriff first saw the body) he most likely died on about Wednesday the 9th of June, 1920.
