Died. - At his home in Longton, Wednesday, July 2, 1902, J.L. Pitts. James L. Pitts was born in Onondago county, New York, April 29, 1825. When 5 years old he moved with his parents to Oswego county, and settled in the town Palermo where he resided eleven years. In 1841 his father and mother joined the morman church and emigrated to Nauvoo, Ill. Five years later the family moved to Cook county and settled near Chicago, where he was married to Delilah Ostrander, Feb. 5. 1848. To this union was born seven children, three girls and four boys. Three children having died when quite young, leaves his wife, to whom he had been married 54 years last Feb. and four children, three sons and one daughter, to mourn the loss of a husband and father who had worked long and hard for them. Mr. Pitts moved with his family to Iowa September, 1853 and came to Kansas in 1868 and settled in Ottawa county. In 1881 he moved to Elk county and settled on his farm near Upola. He moved into Longton about 3 years ago and lived here until his death, July 2, 1902. He was therefore 77 years, 2 months and 7 days old. While Mr. Pitts had not been enjoying good health lately, his death was sudden and a surprise to his family and friends. He was sitting down to the dinner table when he fell and was carried to a bed where he died immediately. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield)
