Description	:	"A centennial biographical history of Richland county, Ohio" states that he was born in Massachusetts on Jan. 1, 1771. Another portion of the book states: "James Loudon Priest, Jr., a civil engineer, about 1805 took his family to French Creek, Pennsylvania, from Onondaga county, New York, and from French Creek he removed, in 1807 or '08 to Sandusky county, Ohio. In the spring of that year William Priest, the eldest son, aged thirteen years, with a fifteen-year old boy as his only companion, drove from French Creek, Pennsylvania, over the mountains and through the wilderness to Sandusky county and cleared... In the spring of that year William Priest, the eldest son, aged thirteen years, with a fifteen-year old boy as his only companion, drove from French Creek, Pennsylvania, over the mountains and through the wilderness to Sandusky county and cleared and planted a patch of corn, so that the family might have provisions upon their arrival. The family consisted of the father and mother and fifteen children and the aged grandfather, who came of a family of large land-holders in England imbued with the idea that the farmer was the important man in the community. James Loudon Priest, Jr., by removing from Sandusky county in 1808 showed his good judgment of land when he located on one thousand acres where Loudonville, Ashland county, Ohio, now stands." There is much more written about James L. Priest in the History of Ashland County Ohio. The monuments says, Aged 53y 7m 9d.... His middle name may have been Loudon, but I it seems to be written more often as Lowden or Louden, even though the town is named Loudonville. Land records in Cayuga and Chenango Cos. New York record him as Lowden or Louden Priest. His grandmother was Anna Lowden married to Jonas Priest. His birth is thought to be New York, but could be Maryland or New Jersy, perhaps Massachusets. His father seems to have been moving around a bit. Difficult folks to track. Some say his mother may have been named Margaret but I have seen no documentaion for this. His father certainly seems to have been James L. Priest, a soldier of the American Revolution. The L. is customarily given as Loudon, being the founder of Loudonville in 1814. It is most probable, that Junior, not Senior was the person who laid out the plat of Loudonville on August 6th 1814. But the records do not say JR., so some have assumed that SR., 77 years old, laid out the town. Maybe so, probably not. It is thought by some researchers that James L. Priest Jr. was raised with a fellow, named Daniel Churchill, whom his father took in at some time. There is a land record in Cayuga Co., New York between a LOUDEN Priest and Daniel Churchill. It is not clear whether this is Louden the father or Louden the son. The Churchill name was given as a middle name in numerous descendants. Sometime it may appear as just Church. James Louden Priest Married Polina Chauncey 25 Nov. 1790. Some say Pennsyvania, but I think it is more likely New York, or possibly Massachusetts. Research continues on this grandfather and his family. Louden Priest and Polina Chauncey had the following known children: 1. William L. Priest b: 16 AUG 1792 2.
