Hoskins, One of Buena Vista County's Oldest Residents, Passes Away Suddenly This community was shocked last Wednesday evening when it was learned that J.M. Hoskins had died suddenly at his home. He had been down town in the evening as usual to get his mail and apparently was in good health and good spirits. Returning to his home he retired about nine thirty, soon after which he was seized with a spell of coughing which resulted in the rupture of a blood vessel at he base of the brain and he passed away shortly after eleven o'clock without having regained consciousness In the passing of Mr. Hoskins Buena Vista county loses one of its oldest residents, he having made Sioux Rapids and this immediate vicinity his home for a half century. This part of Iowa was then in an almost unsettled state and the deceased was one of the leading men in the upbuilding of his community and in the bringing about of law and order. For many years he was a power in the political activities of this part of Iowa and he took an active interest in politics, always from the republican party and point until the time of his death Even until the resent time a great many people had a habit of going to Mr. Hoskins for advice on many problems and his advice derived from long years of good business judgement, was sound and given his friends for the asking He was a man of strong and decided conviction, therefore a good friend and a poor man to make an enemy of Sioux Rapids will miss Mr. Hoskins in many ways, his passing not only being a loss and a grief to his family but to town as well. All sympathy is extended to the bereaved family by their many friends James M. Hoskins was born in North Fairfield, Huron County, Ohio, on January 2, 1846 and was about four years of age when his parents, Amasa and Jane (Murdock) Hoskins, natives of New York, removed from Ohio, to Richland County, Wisconsin. The family home was established upon a farm and form some years the father carried on general agriculture pursuits. Later they moved to Iowa county becoming a resident of Richland Center. He remained under the parental roof during his boyhood days and after the removal tp Richland Center entered upon an apprenticeship at the printer's trade om the office of the Richland County Observer where he was employed until May 1864. He became a soldier of the Civil War when yet a youth in his teens and the same spirit of loyal devotion has characterized his entire life. He was not content to remain at home while his country was still engaged in Civil War and he enlisted for active service when only eighteen years of age, becoming a member of Company F. Forty First Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry for one hundred days. He was honorably discharged October 1 that year but in February 1865 reenlisted as a member of Company H. Forty sixth Regiment of Wisconsin Infantry. He was at Memphis when General Forrest made his attack upon that place but most of his service was spent in provost duty in Northern Alabama After the war was over he again returned to Wisconsin and became one of the owners of the office in which he had learned the Printer's trade and continued the publication of the paper for two years. He then sold out and in 1869 arrived in Buena Vista County. Much of the land here was in possession of the government and Mr. Hoskins secured a claim on section two township ninety three range thirty five where made his home for two years. He was then called to public office being chosen recorder in the fall of 1870 at which time he disposed of his farm took his abode in Sioux Rapids which was then the county seat. After his retirement he turned his attention to the drug business continuing in the line until 1881. He disposed of his store in order to establish the Hoskin and Toy Bank the first banking institution of the town. He remained in active management until 1883, when he sold out. While in the drug business he also became a real estate and loan agent In July 1876, he was appointed postmaster and filled that position until 1886. In May, however, he was reappointed without opposition until 1895. He also served as a member of the board of county supervisors for more than a decade and in office has ever placed the public welfare before partisanship. Following the corporation in 1882 he was elected its first mayor and with the exception of one term continued to fill the office for about ten years. He served on the school board. He also had charge and constructed the Methodist Church at Sioux Rapids On October 30, 1866 in Richland Center. Wisconsin. Mr. Hoskins was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Wilson and to them was born five boys and five girls; Frank W.J., Mrs. W. S. Summer, Charles A. Lula E. Cramel, Mary E.D. Birdie, Ernest, who died in 1908 and Chester A. Mr. Hoskins was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Grand Army Post. While he has capably conducted his private business interests he has never been amiss in the duties of citizenship and his devotion to the public welfare is above question The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Church on Saturday at 10 o'clock.
