He was a native of Tennessee, and in 1854, when only five years old, came with his parents to Mound twp., where he resided to his death. Read More	Obituary: "Died, at his residence in Mound-twp., July 12, 1891, James Rice, aged 52 years. He was a native of Tennessee, and in 1854, when only five years old, came with his parents to Mound twp., where he resided to his death. He was married April 27, 1869, to Miss Maggie Mitchell, who survives him. The writer recalls that in May, 1857, he was passing the log cabin of Hon. Henderson Rice in Mound-twp. Under the shade of a huge tree a man with saw, hammer and plane was fashioning a rude coffin made from the rough boards taken from the loft of the cabin. The coffin was for the wife of Henderson Rice. She was buried on the Rice homestead and hers was the first interment in what is now known as the Rice cemetery, where so many of the old settlers now rest from their worldly troubles and toils. Beside the grave with the wifeless husband stood five or six children, the youngest a barefoot boy. This boy was James M. Rice, the subject of this notice. This was our first meeting, and although many summers have come and gone and many harvests have been gathered since first we met, yet in all these years he was a steadfast friend, socially and politically. In all these years, as boy and man, he has been one of our best citizens. He was patriotic. In 1864, when the confederate General Sterling Price invaded Kansas, young Rice ran away from home and joined the writer's command, participating in the battles of the Blue and of Westport, being the youngest and one of the best soldiers in the regiment. Upon the old homestead where his boyhood days and his happy married life were passed, his remains were lain away beside those of his honored father and mother, and his dust now mingles with theirs. She who shared with him his toils, his sorrows and his joys, and watched over him by day and by night throughout his long illness, with such wifely devotion, will sadly miss him, as she sits in his cottage, widowed, childless and lonely, and may will ask, What is Life?
