Pine-st, who operated a locomotive during construction of the Panama canal, died at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Hospital. Mr. Matchette, who had been ill about two weeks, served as an engineer at the canal for seven years, leaving there after it was officially opened in 1914. He was given a brass medal, cast from equipment abandoned by the French after their abortive attempt to construct the canal, for his work there. Read More	James Matchette, 82, Dies Tuesday Veteran Engineer Worked in Panama James Marion Matchette, 82, of 339 S. Pine-st, who operated a locomotive during construction of the Panama canal, died at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Hospital. Mr. Matchette, who had been ill about two weeks, served as an engineer at the canal for seven years, leaving there after it was officially opened in 1914. He was given a brass medal, cast from equipment abandoned by the French after their abortive attempt to construct the canal, for his work there. The medal lists his service dates and bears a likeness of President Theodore Roosevelt. Mr. Matchette went to the canal zone after serving as a fireman on the old Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton railroad. After he returned to Lima, in late 1914, he was employed as a delivery engineer for the Lima Locomotive Corp. He was serving in that capacity when the last Shay-type locomotive was sent from that plant in 1945 and he retired later that year. A native of Adrian, Mich., he was a member of Lima St. John's Catholic church and the St. Mary of the Woods church, Russells Point. His wife died in 1902. Survivors include a son, Ermund, Frankfort, Ind., a sister, Mary Matchette, 339 S. Pine-st; a nephew, Carroll M. Gift, 339 S. Pine-st; and a niece, Mrs. Rosemary Franklin, 163 S. Dewey-av. Requiem high mass will be at 9:15 a.m. Friday in the St. Johns Catholic church, the Rev. Albert Fate, celebrant. Burial will be in Gethsemani cemetery.
