Jan. 31 at Iowa City James Michel Callahan, one of seven children of John and Emma (Neidinger) Callahan, was born July 7, 1903 in New York City, NY. He entered into rest on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Veteran's hospital in Iowa City. Following the death of his mother and father, Jim was raised at the New York Catholic Protectory orghange in New York City. Mr. Callahan became a member of the United States Navy on June 17, 1920 and served until Aug. 4, 1921. Following his discharge he remained on the west coast until 1924 when he returned to New York. In 1925 he was united in marriage to May Hinckley. To this union was born one son, James William. On June 17, 1926 Mr. Callahan joined the New York City Police Department, spending 18 of his 20 years service in the Harlem district of New York. He retired in 1946. In 1929 he was united in marriage to Gertrude Kempf. No children were born to this union. In August of 1972 he was united in marriage to Agnes Kenyon. Mr. Callahan was a member in good standing of the Army and Navy Union-U.S.A., the oldest veteran's group. He served as National Commander from 1947-1949; as Nation Adjutant from 1949-1951 and National Historian from 1943-1976. He had been very active in keeping the organization informed of its Heritage. He had made awards presentations to graduating Cadets at West Point, Annapolis and the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO. He served as mayor of Victor for 13 years and was instrumental in getting the Victor exit on Interstate 80. He was always interested in youngesters and especially baseball. He was the announcer at the games and scorekeeper. He wrote the baseball news for the Victor Record of a number of years. He was a lover of law and order and had the reputation of "tough in Mayor's Court, but fair." He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Agnes of Victor; his son James William Callahan of New York; four grandchildren, Keith, Kevin, Brian and Kathy Theresa, his daughter-in-law, Irene Callahan; one step son Don Kenyon; one step daughter Linda Pope; six step grandchildren, many friends and neighbors. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Frank O'Dwyer of Roscomon County, Ireland, Mrs. Phil Worth of Pontiac, MI., and Mrs. Fred Frye of North Las Vegas, NV. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. at the McAninch chapel in Victor with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. E. C. Greer officiating. In care of flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Park. Mrs. Ireta Daniels was the organist. Interment was in the Odd Fellows cemetery at Victor with Joe Van Quekelberghe, Rudy Meyer,, Orville W. Bloethe, Bill Pope, Don Kenyon and George Meyer serving as casket bearers.
