He died at two o'clock the following morning without regaining consciousness. James Milton Hall was born August 25, 1839; died in Nelson, Nebraska, Thursday morning, February 20th, 1923. He was a native son of Indiana, having been reared in Putnamville, Putnam county (sic). His education was acquired in a country school and was thorough for the opportunities of that early day. He engaged in the work of teaching during his young manhood. Ten years of his life were spent in Iowa. His marriage to Miss Nancy Jane Ellis occurred August 11, 1864, in Clark county (sic), of that state. Here a little later death came to his companion and he was left to struggle alone. In the year 1873 Mr. Hall came to Nebraska and located at Nelson which at that time was a very small village. Here he met his second companion in the person of Miss Mary Josephine Atkinsson to whom he was united in marriage August 18, 1878. During his early years in Nuckolls county (sic) the deceased engaged in teaching, farming, and for a short time was in business in Nelson. For many years he was Justice of the Peace which in those days meant for the incumbent of such an office a busy life and substantial living. Hundreds of miscreant cases came before his tribunal during those years and in all these his sincerity and justice tempered with mercy, were constantly in evidence. In the election of 1905 Mr. (sic) he was elected to the office of County Judge and he served in this capacity with great ability during two terms. On retirement from office he devoted the remainder of his active life to farming, and in the latter years settled down to pass the ending of his days in Nelson, proving himself to be one of our most highly respected citizens. When the great struggle of 1861 came on Mr. Hall responded immediately to his country's call and entered the service in September of 1861, enlisting in Company I 27th Indiana Reg. During his first and only year of service he was in a number of skirmishes up and down the Shenandoah valley (sic), fought in the engagement at Chancellorsville and a few weeks later was severely wounded at Antietam (sic). Owing to serious disability from his would he was honorably discharged from the service September 6, 1862. On coming to Nelson he assisted in the organization of the G.A.R. in this place and held offices of various kinds in the Post through all the subsequent years, being Post Commander of the same at the time of his death. The family life of Mr. Halls besides his companion, consisted of two daughters and three sons, one of the sons dying in early childhood. Those remaining to survive his loss are: Mrs. Jessie Erwin of Lincoln; Mrs. Maude Reeder of Fairfield; Charles of Merna; and Warren of Nelson. Each of these had a fond attachment for their loving father. There are in addition to his children, two living brothers John of Oscaloosa, Iowa, who was present at the funeral service; and Samuel of Auburn, Wash. There are also several grandchildren. The religious life of the deceased began in his youth. He was a life-long member of the Baptist church and during the years when this organization was active in this community, Brother Hall was ever one of its most prominent and devoted members. His life among us will ever be remembered by those who knew him both by what he was and by the achievements he won. In his demise there has passed from us a sincere Christian, a genuine patriot, a faithful loving father and highly esteemed citizen and friend.
