Description	:	James Mussen Helvie was born in Miami county, Ohio, September 29, 1839, and departed this life January 28, 1915, aged 75 years, 4 months. In his early childhood his parents removed to Cass county, Indiana, where September 26, 1861, he was married to Josephine Corwin. They came to Harvey county, Kansas, in the fall of 1876, moving to the old home place six miles north of Newton, the spring of 1879, where he resided continuously for almost thirty-six years. Read More	James Mussen Helvie was born in Miami county, Ohio, September 29, 1839, and departed this life January 28, 1915, aged 75 years, 4 months. In his early childhood his parents removed to Cass county, Indiana, where September 26, 1861, he was married to Josephine Corwin. They came to Harvey county, Kansas, in the fall of 1876, moving to the old home place six miles north of Newton, the spring of 1879, where he resided continuously for almost thirty-six years. In the old home where the children were reared their golden wedding was celebrated September 26, 1911. He was a life of labor and service of humble parentage, one of thirteen children, all of whom reached maturity, his early life was spent in helping subdue the mighty wilderness of the Wabash valley, his later years in bringing cultivation the prairies of Kansas. He became a member of the M. E. church in 1875. His character was one of the major sweetness, unassuming and sincere, sunny and patient with always a smile and cheery word of greeting. Never in an acquaintanceship covering a period of twenty-five years has the writer heard one word against Jim Helvie. He is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. Ida Walthour, W.F. Helvie and Mrs. Edna Wickman of Newton; J.M. Helvie, of Argentine, Kan; and L.C. Helvie, of Coldwater, Kan. Three children, Bertha, Frank and Lulu preceded him in childhood to an eternal home. There are also twenty-one grandchildren, most of whom reside in Kansas and three great grandchildren.
