Aug 17, 1932 - Carroll Daily Herald - James N. Traner, well known resident of this city, died at St. Anthony hospital this morning at 10:40 from the effects of blood poisoning. When a small boy Mr. Traner was hit on the leg with a rock and it has never been in a normal condition since that time. Thirty years ago an operation was performed on the leg but the immediate trouble was caused when he bumped his leg while stepping into a car about two weeks ago. Blood poisoning set in and Mr. Traner had been in a serious condition since that time. An operation was performed last Friday. James N. Traner was born in Grant City, Aug. 18, 1864, and would have been 68 years old tomorrow. He was the son of George and Isabelle Traner. His mother died when he was about 8 years of age. Following the accident to his leg, he was taken by his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Traner, with whom he lived during most of his youth. For a short time he lived at Wall Lake but has been a resident of Carroll for 52 years, coming here when he was 16 years of age. On Oct. 1, 1885, Mr. Traner was united in marriage to Miss Lillian Hart of Carroll. To this union was born two sons and a daughter: R.J. Traner of Sioux City, Harold Traner of Spencer, and a daughter, Maude, who died at the age of 15. Upon first coming to Carroll, Mr. Traner was employed by the Letts-Fletcher company. Later he took employment with the Standard Oil Company for whom he worked 39 years. Three years ago in December, when serving as city agent, Mr. Traner was pensioned by that company. Besides his widow and two sons, Mr. Traner is survived by four grandchildren, Donald, Jack, Margaret Ann, and Lois Jean Traner; one sister, Mrs. O.J. Coons of Aberdeen, S.D., one brother, George H. Traner of South Pekin, Illinois, and a half-brother, Arthur Traner of Michigan. John Traner of California, a half-brother, preceded Mr. Traner in death. Mr. Traner was a much respected citizen of the city having served in numerous official capacities. He was a member of the city council during the years 1901-02-03-05-06-07-08-09, and at the time of his death was a member of the board of state inheritance tax appraisers. For 18 years Mr. Traner was treasurer of the City cemetery committee, which was formed through the Odd Fellows lodge. This committee was the result of a discussion of cemetery care at a lodge meeting here. G.W. Thomas, who had recently returned from New Orleans, had told of a cemetery he had seen there and from that the discussion drifted to the cemetery here, which was not in good condition. A committee of Mr. Traner, E.A. Wissler and Mr. Shoemaker was appointed to confer with the city council and the proposition was accepted. The cemetery committee appointed was composed of Mr. Traner, E.A. Wissler and Homer Stratemeyer and there has never been a change made until the death of Mr. Traner. The deceased served as a trustee of the Perpetual Care association which operated through the district court. He was a very active member of the Odd Fellows lodge, having held at some time most of the offices. Mr. Traner attended the Baptist church and served it as a deacon. Many friends and acquaintances were the possession of James Traner. He was well liked and considered one of the most reliable of the Standard Oil employees. No funeral arrangements have been made.
