As a child, Jim survived crippling polio which withered and disabled his legs. Accepting and adapting to his disability formed Jim's character into one of steadfast determination and self-reliance. As a high school junior, Jim climbed the water tower to retrieve the senior class flag. Jim graduated from Malvern High School and Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. He returned to Malvern and was employed in the State A. A. A. Office, now the Soil Conservateion Service. In 1950, Jim formed a partnership with Ben Breeding to establish Breeding & Benton Implement Company in Malvern. Jim sold his interest in the business to Ben in 1968. From 1968 to 1976, Jim worked as an accountant for Keith Bruce near Hastings, Iowa and the Collins Drug Company in Malvern. Jim was active in the civic life of Malvern. He served for many years as treasurer of the Malvern Volunteer Fire Department and was recognized for fifty years of membership. He was a charter member and treasurer of the Malvern Student Loan Fund. Jim was a member of the Malvern Gun Club. For many years, he was the transportation chairman for the Memorial Day observance in Malvern. He was affectionately known as "Uncle Jim" to family and friends alike. He loved being with young people and would take his hephews and great nephews fishing at Boehner's Pond, Silver Creek and Forney's Lake. In later years, he enjoyed watching children at the Malvern Pool. Jim scooted around his yard to groom and clear it of any weeds. He spent hours preparing black walnut meats to share with friends. By sheer determination, Jim continued to live in his own home in Malvern until May of 1995, when due to failing health, he moved to the Manor of Malvern Nursing Home. Jim died at the Manor on February 12, 1998, at the age of 86 years, six months and 28 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Max Benton and Hurlbert Benton. He is survived by a sister, Frances, and her husband Dr. Kenneth Brinkhous of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and brother, Thomas Benton and his wife Dorothy of Virginia Beach, Virginia; sisters-in-law, Faye Benton of Malvern and Betty Benton of Stanberry, Missouri; eight nieces and nephews. Funeral services were at the Malvern United Methodist Church on February 16, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Florentino Caole, Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Malvern Cemetery. Pallbearers were Todd Benton, Ty Benton, Andri Sampson, Mark Christianson, Scott Gaylord and Ed Mulholland. Honorary pallbearers were W. D. Baer, R. D. Mansfield, Robert Hopp, F. A. Wortman, Robert Poort and Josiah Benton. Mary Bruce was in charge of the registry book and Holly Gaylord, Jackie Sampson, Billie Hoover and Lori Christianson were the flower committee. Kathy Dickersbach was the organist with the hymns "Amazing Grace" and "Let There be Peace on Earth." Rodney Goy and Lanny Goy were the ushers.
